Work Schedule: 8:00am-5:00pm. Monday-Friday. Some nights and weekends may be required.
The Diversity Center is committed to empowering the Pacific Lutheran University community to engage in dialogue, programs, and initiatives that promote and enhance equity, agency, and action. To that end, the Assistant Director of The Diversity Center is responsible for cultivating a dynamic community in the DJS Lounge which explores and celebrates issues of intersectional identity and diversity, justice, and sustainability. In collaboration with students, faculty, and staff they will develop programs and workshops to engage the campus community in critical conversations and cultivate belonging for historically minoritized communities at PLU. Reports to the Director of The Diversity Center.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Provide leadership to develop, strengthen, and assess programs and services focused on student thriving, belonging, and retention for minoritized students.
Collaborate to design and implement DJS programs and workshops for students, faculty, and staff that promote identity formation, dialogue, and building community across difference.
Collaborate with The Diversity Center staff in hiring, training, supervising, and providing leadership development experiences for undergraduate staff.
Manage the daily rhythm of the DJS Lounge including supervision of the Diversity Advocates.
Coordinate the DJS Club Coalition and serve as a resource to support their club mission and goals through programming and community development.
Teach one section of PLUS 100, Transition to PLU course – designed to assist first-year students in successful navigation of the transition to college and PLU.
Serve as an Academic Advisor for a cohort of 15-20 first year students.
Monitor program expenses and budget.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of and commitment to diversity, justice, and sustainability, intersectionality, and power and oppression and ability to apply in curriculum design and inclusive advising.
Demonstrated investment in student engagement, persistence, retention, and success.
Experience engaging student learning in multiple contexts, including student employment, advising of student organizations, and teaching.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents, including students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple complex and abstract tasks, be detail-oriented, and work independently as well as part of a team.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and other departments.
Skills in counseling, administration, and community development.
Two years of experience in student development, advising, diversity and social justice education, or other related experiences.
Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.
Master’s degree in College Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field.
