Position Impact
The Equity, Inclusion & Diversity (EID) Director works in partnership with the OBUSA leadership team to be a change agent within the organization. The Director will operationalize EID goals in OBUSA’s strategic plan by
- ensuring equitable review of practices & policies across our network by elevating EID efforts into functional work streams
- influencing and facilitating decision-making processes (including policy writing, goal setting and capacity building) that support an inclusive culture
- ensuring ongoing staff & board development around diversity, equity and inclusion
- monitoring and advising on key EID metrics
- leading system-wide EID initiatives

Functions and Responsibilities
Organizational Development
- Sets and executes the plan for organization-wide equity work in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer.
- Reviews current practices and policies, assessing the extent to which they support or hinder the organization’s diversity goals.
- Supports strategy development for recruitment, talent development, employee retention, compensation, and career development.
- In coordination with leadership, develops external relationships that support and foster OBUSA’s Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity efforts.
Resource Allocation and Impact Monitoring
- Establishes and tracks metrics to assess progress toward goals, nationally and regionally, and provides meaningful reporting to CEO and board.
- Manages national EID budget including consultants, leadership development, affinity space, and employee resources.
- Leads assessment of EID initiative design and roll-out, and data tracking and reflection.
Communications
- Supports the creation of external and internal communications and reports to stakeholders about Outward Bound’s EID work.
- Partners with the Marketing team for regular updates and serve as a content consultant.
Risk and Safety
- Participates in crisis response systems and on call to assist with crisis communications.
- Collaborates with Risk and Safety Department to manage equity-related emotional safety and reputational risks.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication, including proven conflict-resolution skills.
- Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local equal employment opportunity laws and regulations.
- Experience with serving diverse communities and deep engagement with supporting leaders, employees, and markets of color.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to translate research and metrics into strategy.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate sensitive conversations among peers.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field.
- At least five years of Human Resources or related experience with at least three years in equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity programs.
- Experience leading EID strategy in the context of an evolving organizational culture and practices.
- Experience with setting goals and solving problems in accordance with budgets and revenue goals.
- Experience working in a multi-unit business environment is a significant plus.
- A strong commitment to equity for BIPOC youth and supporting explicit anti-racist work.
Location and Physical Requirements
- Director will work remotely, with up to 20% travel.
- Ability to work at a desk and on a computer for most of the day
- OBUSA requires all staff to be fully vaccinated and up to date with recommended boosters. OBUSA will require documented verification of vaccination status. Accommodations to the Staff Vaccine Policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Compensation & Benefits
- This is a full-time position with a competitive benefits package, including health/dental/vision insurance, paid time off, short-term disability, long-term disability and retirement plan.
- Salary range: $108K - $130K depending on experience.
