We are looking for an experienced Racial Justice Fellow to join our Impact Litigation team in Los Angeles.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Juris Doctorate and an active member in good standing with the California State Bar within 7 months of hire
  • Minimum of two (2) years of varied litigation experience
  • Background in public interest or addressing social justice issues preferred.
Qualifications

ABOUT THE ROLE

As part of the Advancing Justice Southern California’s Impact Litigation department and under the direction of the Head of Litigation, the Racial Justice Fellow is responsible for performing client counseling and representation duties.  In addition, building upon AJSOCAL’s work in responding to anti-Asian violence and discrimination, the Racial Justice Fellow is responsible for community outreach and education as an ambassador in AJSOCAL’s public awareness campaign. 

The Racial Justice Fellow meets with and advises clients of legal rights and issues, conducts legal research and writing, and litigates on behalf of injured clients.  These activities are expected to include client interviews, meeting with community partners to collaborate on responding to issues, investigating cases and preparing them for action, participating in arbitration, preparing court filings, appearing in court or before administrative agents, and performing other legal advocacy as needed.

 

This position is a fixed term, one year position and covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

Your day-to-day typically includes:

60% Client Services and Case Management

  • Meet with and advise clients of legal rights and options.
  • Investigate circumstances of client cases and identify relevant facts.
  • Conduct legal research and writing in response to client needs.
  • Collaborate with community partner organizations to identify clients and to address client needs.
  • Prepare court filings and other documents on behalf of clients.
  • Represent clients in depositions, hearings, and court, arbitration, or administrative proceedings.
  • Work with pro bono attorneys and volunteers to serve clients and communities.
  • Support in meeting funding and grant reporting requirements.
  • Assist policy advocates with research, analysis, and testimony, as needed.

35% Community Outreach & Education

  • Support community outreach strategies for anti-Asian violence and discrimination public awareness campaign, including public speaking engagements.
  • Conduct community outreach and education, informing appropriate responses to community needs and requests.
  • Cultivate relationships with community partner organizations and community stakeholders.
  • In coordination with the CEO, Development Department, Communications Department, and Community Engagement Department provide communications support, including with media, community stakeholders, and donors.
