Are you interested in Food Justice? Do you want to learn how to grow food? Do you like to teach others how to grow their own food?
Consider participating in the Food Justice Initiative Internship hosted by the Solar Community Housing Association! We are currently recruiting interns for the Food Justice Internship for the Fall of 2023!
What is Food Justice?
“The Food Justice movement envisions a food system that is inclusive, community-led and participatory, without the exploitation of people, land, or the environment. It identifies and acts to remove the significant structural inequities that exist within our food and economic systems. Food Justice activists seek to establish healthy, resilient communities with equitable access to nourishing and culturally appropriate food” (Multnomah Food Policy Council).
Internship Details
Interns work together to manage a mutual aid network that facilitates the exchange of food, labor, material resources and food-production knowledge across the Solar Community Housing Association’s (SCHA) housing cooperatives and extended community. Interns lead the community in stewardship of the Domes Food Justice Farm for the production of food crops and medicinal plants to share freely with the community and stewards of the farm. Interns facilitate community-ledexperiential learning opportunities, such as work parties and teach-ins, to teach people how to grow food and advance food justice in their local community.
Interns will be given the opportunity to selectively choose a role during the course of the internship. These focuses include, but are not limited to:
Garden Manager
Food Access Coordinator
Community Cultivator
Orchard & Perennials Manager
Greenhouse Manager, or
a new role of their choice!
This internship program is a perfect opportunity for students or community members who are interested in building skills in areas including, but not limited to food cultivation, pest management, communication/ media, project management and co-leadership skills.
Work parties and meetings are currently scheduled to take place on Mondays 1-4pm. If you are not available at that time, you may still apply and we will see if we can adjust the schedule to accommodate you. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate you.
What is the Solar Community Housing Association?
