  Job Description

The Amazon Conservation is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that protects the world's richest forests, trains the next generation of Amazonian conservationists, and helps people in the Amazon live better lives through sustainable means. We have an annual budget of more than $4 million and 8 employees, as well as 2 sister organizations in Peru and Bolivia with over 90 employees. The organization seeks a Finance Director to be responsible for all financial matters of the organization. S/he will report directly to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The Finance Director will oversee all compliance, budgeting, financial reporting, and financial management for federal government contracts and grants, foundation awards, and other sources of income. In addition, s/he will partner with the senior program and administrative leadership to develop and implement financial strategies and risk assessment across the organization and in coordination with our sister organizations. S/he must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace.

Specific responsibilities include:

Financial management & reporting

  • Develop and monitor annual organizational budgets, with participation from relevant staff members and partner organizations.
  • Conduct or oversee financial reporting for funders, including private foundations, US government and international organizations
  • Manage and maintain current and forward cash flow planning
  • Guarantee timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial reporting internally and to the Board of Directors.

Strategic financial planning & reporting

  • Maintain close engagement with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to identify strategic budgeting and reporting needs and develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.
  • Work with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to assess financial risk and evaluate success of implementation of programs and business plans.
  • Recommend financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships.

Accounting & administration

  • Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, donors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
  • Conduct cash and asset management, including all ingoing and outgoing transfers of funds and payments
  • Coordinate closely with partner organizations in Peru & Bolivia to ensure clear communication and excellent coordination between organizations.
  • Make certain that all legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions are followed appropriately.
  • Conduct timely and accurate bookkeeping for all organizational expenses and reconcile accounts and credit cards on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
  • Work with auditor to conduct annual audit and any additional project audit required, consolidate audit with Peruvian partner organization.
  • Ensure proper filing of tax returns.
  • Participate in organizational policy development.

The Director of Finance will be a proven financial manager with at least 6 years of finance experience, ideally in communicating and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. S/he will ideally have experience managing finance functions (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources and international partners. Experience managing federal government contracts and international subcontractors is desirable.

The Director of Finance will have the following experience and attributes:

  • A minimum of a BS; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Experience as Assistant Director or Director of Finance or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization and experience with federal funding
  • Experience partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of financial management strategies
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, and compliance, and preferably with federal agency reporting
  • Knowledge of accounting software and standard financial reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laws governing nonprofits and GAAP
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus strong organizational skills
  • Fluency in English and Spanish
