  Job Description

Innovations for Poverty Action seeks a qualified Research Associate to join our Social Protection team. IPA’s Social Protection Program works with governments and other programs working to move households out of extreme poverty by creating economic opportunities for the poor. We have several exciting potential projects with governments and multilateral agencies, including a multi-country RCT of productive enhancements to Social Safety Net programs in Francophone West Africa.

The Research Associate will work on data cleaning, initial analysis, and survey design for several Social Protection projects. The position is based in Washington, DC.

  • Write reproducible code in Stata according to IPA’s style guidelines
  • Clean and label survey data in French and English
  • Standardize datasets across countries; document and construct outcome variables
  • Format follow-up surveys in Excel 
  • Maintain file organization systems in Box and Onedrive
  • Create tables and charts for baseline reports in Stata and Excel  
  • Prepare presentations in French (preferred) and English (required)
  • In collaboration with the Program Manager and PIs, perform initial analysis
  • Ability to read a household questionnaire and internal e-mails in French. French fluency preferred. 
  • Strong technical background with demonstrated success in quantitative coursework.
  • Passion for data, organization, and documentation.  
  • At least 1 year of experience with Stata is essential; must be comfortable exporting tables and writing programs to automate workflow. Previous experience in regression analysis required.
  • Advanced Excel; basic knowledge of VBA to automate formatting and graph making preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as economics, public policy, or statistics. Background in randomized control trials is preferred. 
  • Experience with electronic data collection platforms (SurveyCTO/ODK development experience) preferred.
