About the Aspen Institute:
The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, D.C. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado and on the Wye River of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.
About the Department:
With more than 65 years of experience in executive leadership development, our humanities-based approach starts with the premise that the most effective leaders are self-aware and possess the ability to self-correct. Using diverse classic and contemporary philosophical and literary works as a base for groups of 18-20 to hold intensive, interactive roundtable discussions, our highly-trained moderators challenge participants to identify and actualize their professional values. Through our unique method of moderated, text-based dialogue, participants of our executive leadership seminars are given the tools to develop and continually revisit their individualized leadership platforms.
This position synthesizes two distinct but interrelated responsibilities: 1) communications and network relations designed to build a robust network of graduates and repeat seminar clients, and 2) logistical support and coordination of the actual delivery of the Aspen Executive and other leadership seminar offerings. In the communications and network relations dimension of the position, the Program Associate prepares marketing materials and designs social media and other outreach to support the client development work of the Director and Seminars Manager, including the ongoing curation of the graduate network. In coordinating the Executive Seminar and other leadership seminars, the Program Associate is the main department contact on the ground at every seminar, handling all pre-seminar logistics, overseeing the day-to-day on-site activities of each seminar, and finalizing all pre- and post-seminar administrative and financial duties. Because the position demands considerable phone, email, and face-to-face assistance directly to seminar participants, the Program Associate must possess excellent customer service as well as the ability to exercise discretion, judgment, and a calm demeanor in occasional high-pressure situations. This position requires first-rate organizational skills, attention to detail, a positive can-do attitude, and a passion for the department’s mission of developing values-based leadership for a good society. In addition to seminar duties, this position also provides administrative support to the Seminars department as required.
