Position

Up to 20 hours per week, combination of regularly-scheduled office time in Waltham and various out-of-office commitments, occasional evening and weekend events; in-state day travel to MA schools and colleges.

 

Organization Overview

Families for Depression Awareness is a nonprofit organization that helps families recognize and cope with depression and bipolar disorder to get people well and prevent suicides. Our Teen Depression Program offers training to adults and youths on recognizing teen depression and seeking help. Additionally, we provide opportunities for teens/young adults to share their own stories of depression or bipolar disorder as “Teen Speakers" to dispel stigma and encourage help-seeking by teens who may have a mood disorder.

 

Position Summary

The Teen Depression Program Specialist’s work includes conducting community outreach and program promotion, recruiting and training volunteer speakers, coordinating events, and supporting program development and execution. Reports to the Co-Executive Directors; works collaboratively with other staff members, especially the Programs Coordinator.

 

Responsibilities

Volunteers

  1. Conduct outreach to middle and high schools, colleges, and organizations to foster new relationships and identify opportunities for our organization
  2. Through existing and new connections, promote the Teen Speakers’ program to young people with depression or bipolar disorder ages 14-24
  3. Engage and train new volunteers
  4. Support volunteers’ development of leadership and public speaking skills, and coach on mentoring for longer-term participants
  5. Convene Teen Speaker meetings at least quarterly to foster connection and peer support among participants

Events

  1. Conduct outreach to schools and organizations to book Teen Speaker events and Teen Depression workshops
  2. Coordinate speakers, event logistics, and program with host organization
  3. Provide on-site supervision and facilitation

Healing Families project

  1. Attend “Healing Families advisory council meetings and occasional events
  2. Help plan and conduct project outreach to low-income individuals and to community stakeholders

Other projects

Additional opportunities may include videotape projects, webinars, meetings with funders, social media events (e.g., Twitter chat), etc. Other Teen Depression program activities may be assigned.

 

Qualifications

Our ideal Teen Depression Program Coordinator is a reliable, high-energy young adult who has lived experience with depression or bipolar disorder and is committed to raising awareness about mood disorders among young people and dispelling the stigma of mental health conditions. This person has

  • Interest in helping teens and young adults with mood disorders to find their voice
  • Passion for the cause of advancing non-profits and helping people with mood disorders
  • Excellent communication skills by phone, through email, and in person
  • Strong and consistent organizational skills, including keeping records of contacts, commitments, and results
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Ability to travel within Massachusetts
  • Fluency in more than one language is a plus

 

Compensation

Hourly rate of $15 per hour, plus reimbursement for outreach, meeting, and event mileage, tolls, and parking fees. As a part-time employee, the Teen Depression Program Coordinator receives holiday and personal time but is not eligible for health insurance. This is a grant-funded position, with the possibility of renewal after May 2018.
