  Job Description

MEDIATE Art Group, the San Francisco-based nonprofit arts organization behind the Soundwave Biennial featuring innovative sound, art, and music experiences, is seeking a creative and highly organized Producing Director.

The Producing Director (PD) will take on the exciting work of organizing and executing the Soundwave Biennial with the backing of the Board of Directors’ Programming Committee. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively as needed. They are responsible, and, most importantly, passionate about MEDIATE’s mission to inspire artists and audiences to look deep into ideas and works critically, imaginatively and without limitation. Working with landmark venues in and around San Francisco, the Producing Director is a key role tasked with communicating the technical needs of our shows to multiple venues and managing the execution of all production elements associated with each event. Programming includes live music, experimental audio and video, interactivity and new audience experiences. Technical adaptability is key to this role as the events produced often involve new or emerging technologies as artists experiment within the medium of sound. The position requires a minimum of two years professional experience in production management or technical coordination, creativity, and an interest in pushing the boundaries of multimedia art. Candidates should be proficient with building and managing volunteer, artist, and event teams.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordination with Guest Curators

  • Produce events to suit the unique program needs for up to 5 events in 2017 in coordination with guest curators (Note: MEDIATE anticipates producing up to 10 events in 2018)
  • Liaise with guest curators to determine technical, scheduling and logistical needs for each event program
  • Collaborate with Mediate Board of Directors to select new guest curators for programming beyond 2017

Artist Management

  • Manage artist communication along with guest curators
  • Manage artist contracts
  • Coordinate technical, scheduling, and logistical communication with artists

 Event Coordination and Planning

  • Develop and manage master schedule and milestones for event planning and production
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and venue partners
  • Ensure proper city and venue event regulations are followed. Manage event permits and insurance
  • Manage and help forecast program budgets with board, purchase equipment/supply needs, coordinate and negotiate event production costs
  • Coordinate, procure and prepare event signs/materials and documents
  • Along with guest curators, plan and manage event experience, technical needs, layout, logistics and schedules
  • Coordinate and manage ticketing, sales, and guest list needs
  • Recruit and coordinate event contractors and volunteers for each event
  • Help resolve artist/audience/venue event issues
  • Manage volunteer and contractor production team at events, including supporting setup and strike, merchandise, box office, concessions, ushering and technical production
  • Collaborate with Mediate Board to select new venues for programming beyond 2017

Communication Management

  • Develop marketing strategy and manage communication efforts (collateral, distribution, advertising, social media, press)
  • Manage public relations and communication with media outlets to promote Mediate events

Organizational Leadership

  • Manage tasks, schedules and responsibilities of event contractors and volunteers
  • Promote a healthy work environment, support morale, develop and inspire better internal and external processes
  • Manage internal production schedule and event tasks
  • Lead and moderate production and planning meetings

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Passion for the arts and music
  • At least 2 years professional production experience
  • Highly organized and efficient with excellent time management
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office/Google Docs
  • Self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Laptop required. Knowledge of Adobe Suite preferred
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs a plus
  • Driver’s license and access to a vehicle car preferred. Local travel required for meetings, vendor pickups, equipment transportation and event coordination with venues

 

TIME COMMITMENT

  • April through October 2017, renewable contract
  • Minimum 16 hours/week (more during program weeks, fewer off-season)
  • Additional availability for production meetings and events (some nights and weekends)

 

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

  • This is a fee-for-service independent contractor position
  • $12,000 per 6-month contract during 2017 season
  • Anticipated increased scope and compensation for position during 2018 festival
  • Reports to Mediate Board of Directors
