  Job Description

The AmeriCorps SSVF Housing Support Specialist will work to ensure that any veteran living in homelessness in Salt Lake County is engaged and has access to housing resources.  This position will ensure that men, women and families who have served our country and are living at The Road Home, on the streets or in a partnering shelter are supported as they overcome homelessness.  This position requires flexibility in both personality and schedule which will entail working some variable shifts in order to engage a highly vulnerable population. This passionate self-starter will work for an agency that is both the state’s largest nonprofit housing provider and the state’s largest homeless shelter where assistance is given to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

As an AmeriCorps member, the pay, “called a living stipend” is $650 per month that will be paid twice per month on the 7th & 22nd, until you are no longer in the program, at $325 per pay period. 
This is a Part -time contract and commitment through September 30, 2017, with a minimum of 900 hours of service.
Upon Successful completion of the contract, minimum hours & satisfactory fulfillment of your 10 month contract, you would be eligible for an Education award of $2,887. You may use to either further your education or pay on a previously accrued qualifying Federal student loan(s).

Also while serving as an Operation AmeriCorps member, if you have any qualifying Federal Student loans, they will may qualify for forbearance along with any taxes accrued, will be paid by the National Corporation (Trust) at the end of your contract.

Position to start on or before March 14, 2017. Contract term ends through September 30, 2017.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Identify and target Homeless Veterans who are in the shelter and in the community and engage them in order to get them into housing.

  • Support the SSVF team by building the capacity of the assessment and outreach projects for homeless veterans.

  • Perform paper and digital intakes in ClientTrack and create files with required documentation for all new clients.

  • Document interactions in a timely manner after meeting with a client.

  • Collaborate with program supervisor in ensuring program fidelity, documentation accuracy, and intra-agency collaborations.

  • Attend weekly community collaborations meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Must be able to clear an FBI Criminal Background Check

  • High School Diploma Required

  • Preference for applicants with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent however, not required.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

  • Microsoft knowledge and experience

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

  • Bi-lingual a plus


  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations. Previous work with Veterans preferred

  • Excellent writing and documentation skills

  • Willing to be a proactive member of a team

  • Strong belief in the housing first model

  • Ability to work with community partners

  • Self-starter and self-directed
