Historic Hudson Valley (www.hudsonvalley.org) is the largest cultural institution in Westchester County, New York. A non-profit organization, it educates and entertains more than 300,000 visitors a year through school programs, tours of National Historic Landmarks, and large-scale ticketed public events at festival times like Halloween.
Tours of Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate, are offered via a unique agreement among three nonprofit organizations. The estate is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Trust leases the estate to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, which preserves the estate and maintains it as a center for its philanthropic programs: The Pocantico Center. The Fund engages Historic Hudson Valley to operate a visitor program at Kykuit. Historic Hudson Valley owns the Union Church of Pocantico Hills property, and similarly operates a visitor program at the Church, which is also leased to an active congregation. Many Kykuit guides also elect to interpret the stained glass windows at the Church, and all are invited to work seasonal special events.
Historic Hudson Valley seeks an experienced manager of these tour guides and of program logistics to oversee the visitor programs at Kykuit and Union Church. The position is part of a large department charged with interpreting the past and making meaningful connections for 21stcentury visitors. This is a full-time, ten-month position in Westchester County, New York, with a mix of office and on-site work.
This position is tasked with the oversight of 50+ part-time interpretive staff as well as the smooth implementation of a tour program that serves over 36,000 visitors annually. Central aspects of the job include recruiting, training, managing, and evaluating guides; modeling excellent visitor services skills; communicating with other departments and outside vendors or organizations; and internal reporting. Close coordination with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund on all aspects of implementing the Kykuit program is essential, as is regular liaison with the clergy and lay staff and volunteers at the Church. Excellent judgment and ability to balance competing claims are required, as is staying level-headed in the midst of tremendous activity.
Strong computer skills, including the ability to learn new technologies, are necessary to utilize and troubleshoot various information technology systems, including SiriusWare (ticketing software), GroupWise (email), ADP (timecards and company portal), and Humanity (scheduling software), as well as training guides on making use of these systems.
The successful candidate will have a BA (MA preferred) in history, museums, art history, public history, education, or a related field or at least five years of experience in staff supervision, program logistics, visitor services, or a related field. The Union Church season begins April 1, 2018. A target start date is no later than March 1, 2018.
