College Track empowers students from underserved communities from ninth grade through college graduation. Its proven 10-year program removes barriers that prevent students from earning their college degree by providing them with comprehensive academic support, leadership training, college and financial aid advising, and scholarships. As a result, College Track students graduate college at a rate that is more than double the rate of
their low-income peers.
College Track seeks a smart, dynamic and entrepreneurial Communications Manager who is passionate about telling the story of unlocking every student’s potential through the power of a college degree. The Communications Manager will report to the VP of Development & Marketing and be responsible for evolving College Track’s communication strategy in order to produce more college graduates who leverage their degree and become role models in their communities whilst inspiring others through College Track’s model and approach.
This individual will be an ambassador for the organization, cultivating strategic partnerships and thought leadership in the space of college completion, college affordability, and social mobility. The Communications Manager will also support integrated marketing and communication products in tandem with the Director of Marketing & Alumni Strategy, such as print publications, web presence, social media, newsletters, CEO communications and event communications.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance College Track’s mission; broaden awareness of its program model and results; and increase visibility across key stakeholder audiences.
Create event communications that will allow College Track regions and leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including donors and key influencers.
Collaborate with the Vice-President of Development & Marketing, Director of Marketing, Regional Executive Directors, and Managing Director of Development to create messages that advance College Track’s mission with students, families, program partners and supporters.
Collaborate with the National Leadership Team and staff to recognize external communications opportunities and execute appropriate strategies to take advantage of those opportunities.
Develop and draft content/stories/data for online + print communications, including the annual report, collateral materials and electronic communications, including College Track’s website; manage relationships with associated vendors.
Lead the organization’s social media strategy and execution
Create program flow for national + regional events; draft scripts, select speakers
Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization. Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities.
Assist with preparation of talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed.
Maintain a library of resources (Communications Kit) that ensures the organization remains consistent in its messaging, understanding of audiences, and overall goals; new hire orientation, training refreshers for staff.
Skills & Experience Required:
First and foremost, the Communications Manager must embody the belief that we can transform low-income communities into places where college readiness and college graduation are the norm. Additionally, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (ideally in journalism, political science, communications, or a related media field, advanced degree is preferred)
5 years minimum experience in the communications/marketing field
Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with Leadership Team, Board of Directors, donors, grantees and staff
Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
Creative and thoughtful about utilization of new social/media technologies
Demonstrated experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of content; press releases, print pieces, website and online materials
Strong management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
Eager collaborator with multiple stakeholders
Excellent and persuasive communicator
Innovative, energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; an ability to function smoothly under strict deadlines and shifting priorities
Strong team player who also works well independently
Great sense of humor
