Behind the Book works in high-needs New York City public schools, providing rich, innovative literacy programs in pre-K to 12 classrooms. We identify books that speak to urban students, then partner with teachers to create immersive curriculum units that bring the authors into the classroom to discuss their work, and teach a genre of writing.
Behind the Book seeks a Development & Communications Intern to assist with the organization’s events and promotions. The position is ideal for a go-getter with excellent communication skills interested in being an integral part of a growing non-profit organization’s donor base and public profile. The position is based at our Harlem office, with a commitment for one semester, minimum of 10 hours per week.
Assisting with preparation for fundraising events, including research for décor, gift bag items, and other miscellaneous tasks
Inputting information in Salesforce (database training provided) related to fundraising events
Assisting with donor communications, including thank-you letters
Drafting content to promote fundraising events on Behind the Book’s website and newsletter
Profiling and thanking donors and volunteers for website and newsletter
Maintaining and updating photo bank
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: Detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to manage tasks independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite and social media platforms.
