A Fair Shake for Youth, Inc. is an innovative not-for-profit that runs hands-on programs using therapy dogs to help vulnerable and at-risk youth build greater empathy and self-esteem and reduce bullying. A Fair Shake is adapted from the successful prison dog program model in which inmates build social and emotional skills critical for successful reentry into the community.
A Fair Shake targets kids during their critical middle school years when they are often struggling with who they are and who they want to become. Over 10 weeks an instructor and three therapy dog teams work with a group of students using a structured curriculum of training, tricks and agility along with discussion of dog-related topics including animals shelters, second chances, and breed discrimination that often resonate with the experience of the youth.
In real time kids see the power of positive reinforcement, verbal and non-verbal communication, and relationships built on trust and respect. They learn patience and tolerance, work as a team and see that they are lovable, loving and have a voice. Honest and non-judgmental, the dogs create a safe place in which the kids can explore who they are who they want to be.
A Fair Shake for Youth is a 501(c)3 founded in 2010 that has reached over 1600 youth across 50 school and community organizations in Upper and Lower Manhattan, the South Bronx, and Brooklyn.
