Footsteps supports and affirms individuals and families who have left, or are contemplating leaving, insular ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities in their quest to lead self-determined lives. Through our broad array of programs, critical supports and access to essential resources, Footsteps creates a vibrant community that celebrates the triumphs and advocates for the concerns of our members. Since Footsteps founding in 2003, the organization has served over 1,400 individuals. Footsteps budget has increased to meet the growing demand for services and, for the first time, will surpass $2 million in 2018.

Job Title: Director of Development

Director of Development
Footsteps has an exciting opportunity for a fundraising professional who is talented and engaging to serve as the organization’s first Director of Development and to create a comprehensive fundraising infrastructure and team to grow Footstep’s revenue streams. The Director of Development will be responsible for the overall strategic direction, leadership, and management of all fundraising activities designed to broaden awareness of and financial support for Footsteps. They are responsible for developing strategies to increase the organization’s resource generation, with a focus on individual donor engagement. The Director of Development works closely with the Executive Director, supervises a two-person development team, and is a member of the senior leadership team.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement clear short-term and long-term plans for the development department that are both realistic and challenging, including the creation of a fundraising calendar and budget
  • Promote a culture of philanthropy and appreciation throughout the organization
  • Grow a dedicated fundraising team through hands-on supervision and mentoring
  • Establish strong relationships with board members and high net-worth donors
  • Develop strategies to enhance current revenue streams from individual donors, institutional funders,  direct mail, and online fundraising
  • Create and manage individual stewardship program to cultivate and solicit $1,000+ donors and identify engagement opportunities
  • Oversee communications with donors, ensuring seamless and coordinated messaging, working closely with Communications Manager and Communications Consultant as they design and develop content for e-blasts, direct mail, video and collateral materials for donors and potential donors
  • Collaborate with the Director of Community Engagement to oversee the institutional giving program, ensuring a strong and growing pipeline of foundation funders
  • Manage staff and board members working on donor cultivation events and large fundraising events
  • Ensure integrity of donor data entry system and the acknowledgment process
  • Staff board institutional advancement committee


  • Strong commitment to and passion for the mission of Footsteps and the ability to articulate the importance of the organization’s work to prospective and current funders
  • Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible development experience in a nonprofit environment
  • Significant experience in securing funding from individuals
  • Strong management skills with a record of supervising staff
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, foster, and sustain relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, growing organization, including flexibility to simultaneously perform a wide variety of tasks
  • Ability to work successfully with people at all levels within the organization –staff, board, members, donors, and volunteers
  • Experience with donor databases; Donor Perfect and Salesforce a plus
  • Knowledge of and experience in the organized Jewish community a plus
  • Ability to work some evenings and occasional weekends
  • Bachelor’s Degree
