Director of Finance

Care for the Homeless (CFH) is a growing not-for-profit health care and social service agency that serves the homeless population of New York City.  CFH operates Susan’s Place, a homeless residence and medical clinic, and provides medical and social services at thirty shelters, soup kitchens, and drop-in centers.

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance will be a thought-partner supporting the Executive Management team and will be responsible for leading an internal team that supports finance, business planning, budgeting, forecasting and business data analysis functions.  The Director of Finance will work in conjunction with the business managers in establishing financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems. This position will work to ensure legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. The Director of Finance will oversee general accounting, accounts receivable/collection and risk management.  

Essential Duties and responsibitlies

  • Manages the budget process and develops effective methods revenue enhancement and expense control
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation
  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Implements a contracts management and financial management/reporting system to ensure that contract billing and collection is effectively administered
  • Analyzes, presents and communicates financial reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls
  • Coordinates and leads the annual audit process, work with external auditors, and compliance committee of the board of directors
  • Provides concurrent status of financial condition of the company by collecting, interpreting and reporting key business and financial indicators
  • Consulting with outside advisors, and filing financial reports
  • Advises management of actions and potential risks
  • Oversees reporting to departments and business managers
  • Hires, trains, develops and appraises staff effectively
  • Updates and implements all necessary financial and business policies and accounting practices needed to ensure that the organization’s overall business practices are consistent with its policies 
  • Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy
  • Works transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors, consultants, and business partners
  • Keeps up-to-date on information and technology affecting functional area(s) to increase innovation and ensure compliance
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills with an ability to prioritize negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • MBA or Master’s degree in a business, finance or related field
  • 10 or more years of experience in managing the accounting/finance function in a non-profit health care environment 
  • Knowledge of Abila MIP software and the ability to train staff on these programs

Care for the Homeless advocates for policies to ameliorate, prevent and end homelessness. We occasionally circulate policy information to employees and require that staff review it. While we don’t require it, we encourage every employee to become involved in supporting and advocating for our agency’s policy agenda and related activities.
