Development Manager

Care for the Homeless (CFH) is a growing not-for-profit health care and social service agency that serves the homeless population of New York City.  CFH operates Susan’s Place, a homeless residence and medical clinic, and provides medical and social services at thirty shelters, soup kitchens, and drop-in centers.

The Development Manager provides administrative support to the Development Office and assists with all development activities with a special focus on individual donors (identifying, cultivating and growing the individual donor base) and revenue generating special events. The Development Manager will oversee the management of the donor database. In addition, the position works closely with the Development Associate and Communications Coordinator, supervising some of the activities related to donor communications and special events.


Primary development duties include:

  • Manages and oversees the integrity of the donor database via: gift entry (online and offline) and produces acknowledgement within 48 hours of contribution; codes and maintains donor records and monitors the electronic and hard copy files to assure accuracy; maintains letter library templates for acknowledgement letters; tracks and produces pledge reminders; performs regular database review and analysis to ensure clean data and reporting.
  • Plays a lead role in the execution of annual appeals and special campaigns with a special focus on donor-centered strategy: produces direct mail appeal letters and event and campaign materials; prepares segmented mailing lists; assists with the cultivation and solicitation of annual fund donors of $500+. Evaluates the donor pool for mid-level and higher gift prospects, strategizing cultivation activities with the Development Director.
  • Plays a lead role in all cultivation, fundraising and appreciation activities in conjunction with the Director of Development and appropriate Board and volunteer leadership: tracks and manages the donor recognition process; coordinates the delivery of personalized letters, board letters, stewardship- and recognition-related communications and reports.
  • Produces regular gift reports and analysis, including monthly fundraising reports, and annual audit preparation with the Business Office
  • Conducts preliminary research on current and prospective individual donors;
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of special events, including revenue generating events as well as donor cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Writes donor correspondence, makes copies, scans correspondence, and ensures timely and personalized donor communications.
  • Responds to requests from Board and staff members



  • Minimum 3-4 years’ experience in a nonprofit organization fundraising department
  • Experience managing a database required (experience with donor database software preferred)
  • Experience with or knowledge of growing a donor database, stewardship and cultivation of individual donors.


  • Bachelor’s degree, related field required
