About Hot Bread Kitchen & HBK Incubates

 

Hot Bread Kitchen creates economic opportunity through careers in food. We achieve our mission

through our programs: Bakers in Training, an intensive, paid on-the-job training program in

bread-baking for women who face significant social and economic disadvantages; and HBK Incubates, a

culinary incubator that provides licensed commercial kitchen access and business development

support for food entrepreneurs.

 

Job Description

 

We are looking for a dynamic individual with business, finance and teaching experience to help the entrepreneur community, particularly food businesses grow and develop through our incubator’s services.

 

The Business Advisor will oversee and track the progress of program participants. The Advisor’s work will be split between providing technical assistance to entrepreneurs (finance, accounting, marketing and operations support) as well as developing and teaching food-focused, business planning courses and workshops. The Business Advisor will report to the HBK Incubates Program Director.

 

Specific Duties

 

  • Meets with and counsels entrepreneurs on business planning topics including strategy, financial modeling, break-even, operations and marketing.
  • Engages business in actionable items targeted at effective financial management, understanding their cost structure, calculating gross margin and revenue generation strategies.
  • Designs, develops and oversees program curriculum and serves as lead instructor for comprehensive Business Planning course.
  • Oversees tools and resources for food businesses; refers members to appropriate internal and external resources
  • Document, track and share meeting notes  as well as key program metrics from entrepreneurs. Prepares reports, financial statements and records program activities and progress for management or outside agencies.
  • Identifies workshop needs and recruits and advises workshop facilitators to conduct workshops for incubator members
  • Represents Hot Bread Kitchen at industry events to gain knowledge that will be helpful to program members including resource centers for small business owners and entrepreneurs as well as various funding and financing sources.
  • Helps ensure that revenue and business development targets are met.
  • Evaluates program effectiveness and implements improved methods; works with Program Director to devise and implement evaluation methodologies; analyzes results and takes proper action based on outcome. 
  • Works with Program Director to develop own work plan in accordance with program objectives and needs.  Works independently to comply with program work plan.  Adjusts activities when needed to guarantee program success.

 

 

Skills and Experience Desired:

 

  • A BA in Business, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, or related field (MBA a plus)
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in either entrepreneurship, business development, small business, advising, commercial banking, economic development or related experience working with start-ups
  • Experience in financial analysis, marketing, and business plan development
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Quickbooks
  • Curriculum development and teaching experience a plus
  • Passion for helping food entrepreneurs and desire to learn about social enterprises
  • Ability to work closely with multi-cultural clients and familiarity with the economic issues of a low-income population
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship building and professional communication skills
  • Flexible to work nights and weekends if necessary
  • Commitment to Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission of empowering low-income, foreign-born women and NYC food entrepreneurs
