Summary of Job:

The Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for planning and executing an annual fundraising campaign with a goal of increasing the number and size of gifts and pledges over $10,000 to meet the long term needs of the LA/SPCA.  This position will report to the Development Director. We are seeking an experienced fundraiser (3+ years) with a strong track record of soliciting gifts at $10,000+ and maintaining a portfolio of 75-100 donors and prospects while coordinating the solicitation efforts through a systematic process of prospect identification, qualification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement and stewardship. The ideal candidate will possess strong strategic and organizational skills, as well build relationships through in person visits, written and verbal communications, the organization and cultivation of fundraising events. They will also be responsible for tracking progress made toward the goal.


This position will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and members of the Board, who will assist with opening the door and providing support in the cultivation and solicitation of major donors. As well as to involve and coordinate with appropriate staff to ensure the timely fulfillment of recognition of gifts and tracking prospects and donors while providing high levels of donor stewardship.


Essential Functions:

  • Research and identify new major gift prospects, including both individuals and foundations
  • Manage a pipeline of current donors and prospects, tracking cultivation, planning solicitation strategy, and making solicitations
  • Direct and plan major gift prospect meetings and prospect management strategies for the CEO and Development Director
  • Create collateral materials for major gifts program
  • Work with Board of Directors and volunteer partners to develop strategies to support them in making major gift solicitations
  • Make calls personally; develop and manage a personal portfolio of 75-100 major gift prospects
  • Supervise the development of marketing collateral and materials in coordination with Communications Director for use with major gift prospects
  • Supervise all gift processing and acknowledgements of major gift donations
  • Provide stewardship for major gift donors; supervise the interaction of major gift donors with the Shelter and all aspects of the LA/SPCA
  • Identify innovative ways to increase major gift donations, such as peer-to-peer fundraising, on site meetings and tours, or small group events
  • Responsible for tracking major gift prospects and donors and documenting their cultivation and solicitation activities through Raiser's Edge software
  • Identify and market key naming and recognition opportunities for potential major gifts, including program, capital, and endowment options
  • Plan and execute small group events if appropriate to the strategy for cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects
  • Acts as an ambassador of the Louisiana SPCA both internally and externally and is knowledgeable of all aspects of the LA/SPCA in order to provide needed information to supporters, donors, clients and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned by Development Director and approved by CEO


Education and/or Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited college or university with a combination of course work and experience in business administration and the social sciences is desirable. 
  • CFRE preferred


Minimum Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):

  • Minimum of 3 years of fundraising experience required; 5 years of experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including the ability to write and speak in a clear, sincere, and compelling manner
  • Demonstrated successful experience in prospect identification, relationship building and solicitation
  • Significant and successful experience performing personal solicitation of gifts in excess of $10,000+ and staffing volunteers to ask for large gifts is required
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple demands and/or projects simultaneously
  • Ability to travel, as well as attend events on evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-starting capacity
  • Experience working with sensitive information and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated and able to work under pressure on multiple projects.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical and substance screening
  • Exceptional computer skills in a variety of programs including Raiser's Edge, Foundation Search, Word, Excel, Power Point and databases.
  • Possess a sense of humor and ability to work in a diverse and untraditional atmosphere.  
  • Mental and physical flexibility a must.


Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping. 
  • Should not be allergic to animals; must be able to work around all animals

  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches. 
  • Works in an area with a high noise level.
