Our Teaching Tolerance project combats prejudice among our nation’s youth while promoting equality, inclusiveness and equitable learning environments in the classroom. We produce an array of anti-bias resources that we distribute, free of charge, to educators across the country – award-winning classroom documentaries, lesson plans and curricula, Teaching Tolerance magazine, and more.
The Editorial Assistant for Teaching Tolerance functions as a member of the organization’s editorial team and is responsible for supporting all aspects of the organization’s publication planning, development and implementation scheduling. Administrative expertise, sound editorial judgment and excellent written communication skills are essential to the role.
• Newsletter and Email Marketing
o Tests and deploys weekly newsletter, including A/B versions and dynamic content;
o Builds and deploys specialized email campaigns;
o Builds polls in Survey Monkey as needed.
• Freelancer Contracts and Communications
o Initiates and tracks all contracts with freelance writers, editors and fact checkers;
o Maintains regular contact with writers and tracks drafts as they are submitted for review;
o Tracks unsolicited submissions and responds to editorial-related customer service questions/requests;
o Under supervision of the senior editor, finalizes content that has been submitted by freelance editors.
• Publication Scheduling/Project Management
o Builds out schedules for all publishing projects;
o Track progress, sends reminders and updates schedules as needed;
o Upon completion, oversees printing, posting, and communicating with TT’s marketing associate and the SPLC’s communications department.
• General Support
o Works closely with the new media associate to post new material to the web;
o Supports the senior editor, deputy director and marketing associate as needed;
o Writes marketing text and articles as needed;
o Provides copy editing support as needed.
