Bridge the Gap College Prep - Bridge the Gap College Prep (BTGCP) provides college success for Marin City Youth. BTGCP offers culturally competent, accessible, relevant and comprehensive academic and youth development enrichment outside of the school day in a demanding yet nurturing college preparatory environment through its After School Extended Learning Day Program for 4th through 12th grade. BTGCP will expand its services to support our students in college to ensure they have the resources and counseling to persist and succeed in attaining their bachelor’s degree.
Position Overview:
The College Completion Advisor is responsible for advising and creating success plans for low-income students to ensure that Bridge the Gap College Prep students graduate with a bachelor’s degree within six years. The ideal candidate is an effective advisor with experience and knowledge of navigating community college transfer plans, and resources available to help students at four-year colleges. The individual is self-directed, with experience advising, influencing and managing first-generation college students.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
In collaboration with the High School and College Success Director, help create and manage a college persistence and success program for low income, first-generation college students entering and continuing in college. The job includes managing a caseload of college students to achieve the following:
- High School Student Support: Work closely with the Highschool program to develop relationships with high school juniors and seniors, help match students to career visit days with professionals and run the career speaker series.
- Student Transition Support: In collaboration with the College High School and Success Director, provide individualized support and create college transition plans for high school seniors to ensure students succeed in college. Collaborate in the planning and execution of the annual College Transition Retreat
- Academic Achievement: Review student data consistently. Provide direct coaching and utilize motivational interviewing techniques to ensure students make behavioral changes that lead to health and success and ultimately, are on track to graduate. Whenever possible, refer students to appropriate college resources on campus, e.g. financial aid office, mental health center, tutoring program, etc. Plan two events per year for enrolled college students. Develop and maintain contacts at local colleges and universities in order to provide outstanding alumni support and potential alumni clustering
- College Affordability: Support students in graduating from college with manageable debt. Ensure students apply for and receive all available financial aid and scholarships.
- Future Opportunities: Serve as a resource to students by connecting them to career and leadership development opportunities. Research/assist alumni with placement in summer opportunities/programs/internships
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 2 to 3 years advisory or counseling experience related to college access, persistence support for student and their success
- Commitment to working with underserved students and families
- Ability to self-direct and create programming not already established
- Flexibility and willingness to contribute when necessary on projects outside of own department
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others and build relationships across teams and schools
- Ability to work independently and with autonomy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Strong achievement orientation with exceptional time management skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
- Must be able to lift 15 lbs.
- Must be able to stand for at least 1 hour
- Must be able to sit at computer workstation for long time periods
