Director – AIDS Walk Los Angeles
Serve as Director of APLA Health’s annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles (AWLA). Oversee all aspects of the event, including campaign design and marketing, recruitment of participants, managing outside logistics production company, maximizing fundraising, budgeting and monitoring expenses and overseeing all AWLA full time and temporary employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervised by the Chief Advancement Officer and working directly with the CEO, CFO and key members of the Board of Directors direct the overall planning and execution of APLA Health’s annual AWLA.
Responsible for maximizing the AWLA experience for all participants and the financial and public relations /community relations benefits for APLA Health.
Lead responsibility for achieving APLA Health’s financial, operational and public awareness objectives for AWLA. For AWLA 2018, shadow and assist the current AWLA event production company. For AWLA 2019, assume primary responsibility for all components of AWLA except planning for and “day of event” logistics.
Provide leadership to solidify and increase AWLA’s appeal to walkers; including recruiting returning registrants from prior AIDS Walks, recruiting new registrants, maximizing the conversion rate of registrants to fundraising walkers and maximizing fundraising.
Provide leadership to solidify and increase AWLA’s appeal to corporate and other teams; including recruiting returning teams from prior AIDS Walks, recruiting new teams, motivating the teams to maximize participation and fundraising.
Providing leadership to solidify and increase AWLA’s corporate sponsorship support.
For AWLA 2019, manage an outside logistics production company.
Hire, train, and supervise all AWLA full time and temporary staff and volunteers including individual and team fundraising staff, sponsorship staff and office administrative staff.
Working with the CFO, develop the AWLA program budget, and maintain income and expense records.
Working with the Director of Communications, Advancement Operations Manager and outside consultants to development and implement AWLA marketing campaigns, including: mail, print advertising, point of purchase displays, street banners, phone recruitment, creation and distribution of promotional materials, and website content and design.
Manage all AWLA vendor relationships.
Working with the Advancement Operations Manager, oversee the operation of the AWLA database and CRM applications.
Promote the event widely throughout the community through public speaking during information sessions, orientations, seminars, and special events.
OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED TO MEET BUSINESS NEEDS.
Core Competencies and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of experience managing large-scale events required.
Nonprofit experience preferred. Experience with a mass participation fundraising event such as a walk, ride or run preferred.
Prior management experience required. Ability to work well managing/leading a team while also completing individual goals on a timely basis.
Superior organizational abilities, strong presentation and public speaking skills required.
Customer service skills and effective problem-solving skills required.
Special events, sales, and/or marketing experience required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Capacity to perform multiple tasks with accuracy, prioritize workflow, and realize goals while meeting deadlines in a timely manner.
Experience speaking to large groups in a clear and concise manner to engage, motivate, and actively work with a wide variety of individuals and audiences.
Capable of working in a fast-paced office environment.
Total commitment to the success of AIDS Walk Los Angeles is expected: the campaign is very seasonal and can require long hours with some weekend and evening hours, especially in the final weeks leading up to the event. Working the weekend of AWLA is required.
Must have HIV/AIDS sensitivity and awareness of issues facing the LGBT community.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point. Familiarity with Rallybound fundraising platform a plus.
Motivate and inspire participants and volunteers; must be able to work with a diverse demographic of participants; able to manage multiple projects with demanding deadlines. Must be able to work within a team environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is primarily an office position that requires only occasional bending, reaching, stooping, lifting and moving of office materials weighing 25 pounds or less. The position requires daily use of a personal computer and requires entering, viewing, and revising text and graphics on the computer terminal and on paper.
Frequent local travel. Must possess a valid California driver’s license; proof of auto liability insurance; and have the use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes. Must have the ability to work evenings and weekends.
