Education Attorney


The Alliance for Children’s Rights, an established and well-respected nonprofit organization located on Wilshire Boulevard in Koreatown, is accepting applications for an Education Program Attorney to work to protect the special and general education rights of foster youth in grades K-12.


About the Alliance

The Alliance for Children’s Rights protects the rights of impoverished, abused and neglected children and youth. Our lawyers, advocates and social workers, together with hundreds of pro bono attorneys and community volunteers, ensure children have safe, permanent homes and can access the healthcare, education and financial resources they need. We also help transition-age youth achieve self-sufficiency, and work statewide to improve child welfare practices and policies in order to remove the many barriers our clients face. Major responsibilities include the following:

  • Represent clients in school district meetings including enrollment, graduation planning, and Individualized Education Program meetings.
  • Train and supervise pro bono attorneys, interns and law clerks.
  • Develop and update general and special education materials for clients and the community; conduct community outreach and trainings including training school district staff on the general education rights and trauma informed needs of foster youth.
  • Coordinate services with social workers/probation officers, children’s attorneys and the juvenile court to ensure appropriate education services for children in foster care.
  • Represent the Alliance at education related policy meetings; identify trends and advocate to change/implement policies to improve foster youth’s access to education services.
  • Perform additional administrative duties.


Required skills and qualifications include:

  • CA bar admission plus 3-5 years of experience.
  • Experience in school district general and special education advocacy, Dependency/Delinquency Court and/or child welfare system strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - ability to communicate effectively with clients, attorneys, child welfare/probation agencies, the judiciary and the public.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Desire to help others.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) highly preferable.
