Job Title:         Mujeres en Acción Program Coordinator

Reports to:      Project Manager &  Executive Director

Status:             Full-time position (Non-Exempt, 40 hours/week)

Start date:       August 16, 2017

End date:         June 30, 2018

 

 

The Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) is a nonprofit community based organization whose purpose is to promote self-determination in the Latino community in Southern California politically, culturally, and economically using popular education methodology.  We promote the development of collective solutions to community problems.

 

Mujeres en Acción is a project currently under IDEPSCA’s Workers Health Program. Originally started by domestic workers members of the organization in 2011,  Mujeres in Acción is now a project that focuses on the interests and needs of immigrant women through weekly meetings and advocacy. Mujeres en Acción values the paid and unpaid work of all women and seeks to support them in their personal, community and family development.

 

Position Summary:

The Mujeres en Accion Program Coordinator will take the lead in accomplishing the goals, plans, activities, evaluations and performance of the Mujeres en Acción project. This includes supporting the Project Manager with administrative work ensuring fulfillment of grants/contract requirements and, funding compliance reporting, and other financial and accounting procedures to maintain accountability in the project. Main areas of focus will include development of new membership model for domestic workers, leadership development and parent engagement of existing members, and worker rights enforcement and advocacy.  The Coordinator will be in charge of providing technical support to Outreach staff and volunteers; she/he/they will dedicate her/his/their entire time to the overall coordination, planning, and ensure implementation of the Mujeres en Accion project which will work closely with existing partners/coalitions, such as, UCLA Labor Center, California Domestic Workers Coalition, Los Angeles Worker Center Network and the National Domestic Workers Alliance  (NDWA).

 

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Create family economic security programs with a focus on needs of low-income households with children in pre and elementary school
    1. With support of Program Manager, create a participatory process for members to identify needs, as well as barriers that seek solutions beyond survival
  2. Help create strong partnerships with worker advocacy groups, city government, Los Angeles school and district leaders and labor allies
    1. Connect with partners to ensure the inclusion of domestic workers in local issues (examples: tenants rights, wage theft, etc)
    2. Help create opportunities for domestic worker members to actively participate in local issues (examples: invite them to local actions, in-district visits, etc)
  3. Participation in resource fairs at trusted neighborhood sites like libraries, community centers local schools that help increase the visibility of Mujeres en Accion
    1. Strengthen connections with existing partners and build with new local partners representing Mujeres en Accion
  4. Increase and maximize parent child engagement amongst domestic workers and immigrant women
    1. Identify and help implement workshops for children that connect to the realities of their families
    2. Seek new opportunities for children and parents to learn together
  5. Support the creation and development of a parent worker leader group of 10-15 women with school aged children between 3-10 years old.
    1. Along with the rest of the Mujeres en Acción team, develop leadership curriculum to support parent worker group create their own community projects and outreach to other domestic workers. Goal is to outreach to at least 250 families. 
  6. Support the overall membership growth of Mujeres en Acción
    1. Help coordinate the logistics of weekly meetings along with Outreach staff
    2. Support outreach in keeping track of growth, by keeping documentation of attendance and membership database
    3. Lead Staff and members in creating outreach materials about membership benefits and general information about Mujeres en Accion
    4. Support outreach staff in connecting 100 members to NDWA benefits and events
    5. Supporting outreach staff with ideas for retention for existing members and follow up with new members
    6. Coordinate the monthly programming by contacting potential facilitators and/or preparing workshops for members when necessary to do in-house
    7. Support Outreach staff in creating new member orientation
    8. Support in creating structure for leadership development and projects with existing members
  7. Promote popular education methodology in all aspects of the Program, ensuring participatory processes, as well as evaluation that includes membership

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  (Skills and Qualifications)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledgeable in popular education, coordination of programs, and community organizing.
  • General knowledge and commitment to immigrant rights, social justice and women’s rights.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish).
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Strong knowledge of computer operations (programs such as: Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Strong management/supervisory skills.
  • Patience and courtesy a must.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations.
  • Ability to work early and long hours when necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.

 

 

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  Salary, $2,947 per month. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance; sick days, vacation days and holidays.
