Job Title:         Mujeres en Acción Community Outreach

Reports to:      Project Manager, Project Coordinator &  Executive Director

Status:             Part-time position (20 hours/week)

Start date:       August 16, 2017

End date:         May 31, 2018

 

 

The Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) is a nonprofit community based organization whose purpose is to promote self-determination in the Latino community in Southern California politically, culturally, and economically using popular education methodology.  We promote the development of collective solutions to community problems.

 

Mujeres en Acción is a project currently under IDEPSCA’s Workers Health Program. Originally started by domestic workers members of the organization in 2011,  Mujeres in Acción is now a project that focuses on the interests and needs of immigrant women through weekly meetings and advocacy. Mujeres en Acción values the paid and unpaid work of all women and seeks to support them in their personal, community and family development.

 

Position Summary:

Mujeres en Accion Community Outreach Organizer has outreach responsibilities for the accomplishment of the Goals, Plans, Activities, Evaluations and Performance of Mujeres en Accion as part of our work with different partners and coalitions, such as the California Domestic Workers Coalition (CDWC), National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) and the UCLA Labor Center.  Main areas of focus will include: street outreach, follow up calls, support with member retention and implementation of new membership model, which includes conference calls and texting.  The Outreach Organizer will also work closely with the Outreach Lead and the Project Coordinator to ensure the fulfillment of grants / contract requirements and, funding compliance reporting, and other financial and accounting procedures to maintain accountability in the project.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  1. Weekly street outreach based on “hot spots” map created by Mujeres en Acción to help reach the 100 new members goal and any additional one-on-ones as needed
    1. Talk to non-organized domestic workers using printed materials of Mujeres en Accion and encourage participation in new membership model
    2. Collect information of potential new members and follow up with phone calls and/or texts to ensure member retention
    3. Be available to have one-on-one meetings with potential new members to help explain Mujeres en Acción membership
  2. Documentation of outreach
    1. Help upkeep the member database by entering new member information
    2. Document worker testimonies and feedback in order to support the growth of project
  3. Represent Mujeres en Acción at community and sister organization events/meetings and encourage participation of members
    1. Share with Mujeres en Acción members about any relevant events/meetings based on their expressed interests and encourage their participation
    2. Go to events/meetings and report back to Staff, as well as Mujeres en Acción members
  4. Support Project Coordinator and Lead Outreach in new membership model development and implementation
    1. Based on street outreach and talking to potential new members, help Staff build the new membership model for domestic workers that reflects their reality and needs
    2. Help Outreach Lead craft agendas and facilitate as needed meetings, in-person or via conference call
  5. Participate in conference call meetings relevant to domestic workers as needed, such as the CDWC and the NDWA.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  (Skills and Qualifications)

 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledgeable in popular education, coordination of programs, and community organizing.
  • General knowledge and commitment to immigrant rights, social justice and women’s rights.
  • Bilingual preferred (English and Spanish), but most work will be in Spanish.
  • Ability to effectively communicate via email and phone.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operations (programs such as: Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
  • Patience and courtesy a must.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations.
  • Ability to work well with a team and take initiative.
  • Ability to work early and long hours when necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to be detail oriented, as will need to track member information.

 

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  $1,400 per month.
