Executive Director

 

THE POSITION

The National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) seeks an experienced movement builder to serve as Executive Director. The Executive Director will continue NFYI’s mission to facilitate the transformation of our country’s foster system by amplifying the national voice of concern and creating a groundswell of support for change. The Executive Director will expand NFYI’s platform to organize a social movement led by the families and youth most impacted by the child welfare system. This will inspire a cadre of dedicated, committed activists at the community level who will champion foster care reform, change cultural norms related to how it is viewed across the country, and elevate the profile of the issue by creating demand for change at the policy and system levels.

NFYI offers a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial, high-energy, and self-directed leader to grow and enhance the existing foundation of NFYI’s national movement to significantly improve the lives of countless children and families. The ideal candidate for this role is a passionate, committed, experienced organizer who is excited to drive the impact of a lean and high-performing, organization. S/he will bring experience managing a campaign or movement, executing against an agreed upon strategic direction, and be a politically savvy leader that builds partnerships and relationships at the local, state, and national levels.

This position is based in Los Angeles, California.

 

ABOUT NFYI

The National Foster Youth Institute aims to help transform the nation’s child welfare system by building a broad-based social movement led by young people and families directly involved with the system. Transformative change includes legislative changes, providing services to families in crisis, preventing the removal of children, ensuring children in care experience a normal childhood, and addressing inequities in the current system.

Launched in 2013, NFYI’s unique programs include:

  • Youth and Family Leadership Corps – recruitment, training, and organizing of youth and families in all 435 Congressional Districts across the country.
  • Annual Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Experience – foster youth from across the country shadow their Members of Congress, deliver policy recommendations to the White House and Congress, and participate in leadership development workshops.
  • National Child Welfare Listening Tour – ongoing series of site visits, town halls, and meetings between Members of Congress, other policymakers, youth, and families throughout the country.
  • Policy Roundtable Series – substantive panel discussions and dinner dialogues on issues impacting foster youth and families. Participants include Members of Congress, local and state policymakers, youth, families and other community stakeholders.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Lead, recruit, coach, develop, and retain NFYI’s high-performing team of 5 to 10 staff.
  • Communicate effectively the mission, vision, goals and accomplishments of NFYI to the members of the child welfare community, policy makers at the local and national levels, funders and the public in general.
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors.
  • Be engaged actively with the strategic direction for both ongoing local operations as well as the ongoing national rollout of the NFYI.

 

Fundraising:

  • Develop and effectively manage a budget to reflect the goals and strategic plans of NFYI.
  • Raise the revenue needed annually to support existing program operations and expansion in concert with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop a fundraising strategy to expand our network of both funders and individual donors.
  • Develop a strategy whereby funds for the upcoming fiscal year are in place by the end of the 2Q of the current fiscal year.

 

Management:

  • Oversee the consistent quality of financial operations, administrative systems and communications strategy.
  • Recommend and implement timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
  • Ensure effective systems to track progress are in place to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funders, and other constituents.

 

Partnerships:

  • Creatively leverage NFYI’s external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities and capitalize on current events and relationships.
  • Work with Members of Congress and other policymakers to drive child welfare reform agenda.
  • Deepen NFYI’s communications strategy to change the national consciousness about foster care and inspire action.
  • Engage with other thought leaders and social activists to develop a cohesive message around current child welfare issues.

 

Programming:

  • Ensure programmatic excellence and rigorous program evaluation.
  • Design and execute and build on the national expansion and strategic planning process for nationwide programs.
  • Work with stakeholders and partners in Washington, D.C. to organize roundtables, panels, and briefings educating legislative and executive leaders on child welfare issues in addition to an ongoing nationwide listening tour in partnership with the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth.
  • Develop grassroots organizing infrastructure in each of the 435 Congressional districts.
  • Provide oversight and support for the National Organizing Director and Program Director in fulfilling the mission of developing a grass roots action network.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work with and relate to the foster youth and former foster youth with whom NFYI works.
  • Unwavering passion for issues related to social justice and poverty alleviation.
  • Commitment, ability and experience working with diverse populations, including low income communities of color.
  • Demonstrated track record of building/actively participating in social movements is required.
  • Creativity and political savvy needed to introduce and champion a vision for change.
  • Experience developing targeted campaigns to build public support for an issue or political campaign.
  • A track record of building highly effective entrepreneurial teams and managing high performing professionals; a team builder who is participatory and inclusive in management style but also knows how to delegate when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in fundraising through building relationships with corporate and private foundations, grant writing, event planning, and raising funds from individual donors.
  • Proven senior management experience of at least 5 years.
  • A proven ability to effectively lead and scale a results-driven organization, specifically with the experience developing and operationalizing strategies that have advanced an organization to the next stage in its growth.
  • Experience leading the execution of a strategic plan, recruiting and coaching high performing teams.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work in a politically driven environment.
  • S/he must be collegial and congenial, possessing impeccable writing, presentation and oral communication skills, as well as an ability to synthesize and translate complicated information into clear and simple language.
  • Maturity, good judgment and keen analytical skills, including the ability to think critically, make decisions, and justify recommendations based on data and analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator.
  • The willingness and ability to travel significantly between Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, California and other regional offices as developed
