Good Shepherd Volunteers is a one-year full-time volunteer program that serves women, children, and adolescents affected by poverty, violence and neglect. The upcoming volunteer year starts August 2017 and ends approximately July 2018. Our volunteers live in community with each other, have a small living stipend, and practice the 4 Tenets of GSV: social justice, community, spirituality, and simplicity.
Currently we have positions open serving at a domestic violence shelter in Los Angeles. Good Shepherd Volunteers assist teachers at the school on site or, if applicable, may have a classroom of their own. Volunteers aid in the planning and preparing of classroom lessons and activities, preparing needed materials and supplies, and creating a safe and therapeutic environment. You will also have the opportunity to help with field trips, parties, holidays and other events related to the Good Shepherd Shelter program. Many families are Spanish speaking, sometimes Spanish the only language spoken in the home. Although helpful, volunteers do not need to be proficient in the language.
Volunteers in this position may also have the opportunity to participate and be trained in the Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) at the West Los Angeles Police Department.
