ABOUT ESPERANZA ACADEMY: Esperanza Academy is an independent, tuition-free middle school in the Episcopal tradition where 60 underserved girls from Lawrence, Massachusetts are welcomed into an empowering learning community. Founded in 2006, Esperanza offers its students a transformative education that integrates a rigorous academic curriculum with co-curricular programs in athletics, the arts, community service, cultural-enrichment, social skills, spirituality, and outdoor education. This holistic educational approach has accrued a remarkable track record: Our graduates attend 23 different secondary schools—more than two thirds of each graduating class has earned full scholarships to independent and boarding schools— and boast a 100 percent high-school graduation rate. Eighty percent of eligible Esperanza graduates are also enrolled in college.

OUR STUDENTS: Esperanza Academy serves 60 middle school girls, 95 percent of whom are Latina and 91 percent learned English as a second language. 100 percent of incoming students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

While Esperanza is rooted in the Episcopal tradition, nearly all of our students come from other traditions.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: Following the Nativity Miguel model, the Graduate Support team works to ensure the academic, emotional, and social success of our graduates as they make their journey through high school and college. The Associate Director of Graduate Support is a critical position at Esperanza, and it will be integral to the steady growth and overall success of our program. The Associate Director will report to the Director of Graduate Support. The responsibilities listed below are in no way all inclusive or exhaustive; rather, it is understood that the Associate Director may be asked to perform other duties as requested by the Director or Head of School.



  • Work closely with students and their families, often one-on-one, in order to educate, support, and empower them through the difficult process of researching and applying to private high schools.
  • Manage the annual 8th grade HS application process by collecting application materials from students, gathering necessary documents from parents, coordinating teacher references and registering students for

   testing (HSPT and SSAT), and maintaining ongoing student files.

  • Teach weekly High School Prep class for all 8th grade students, focusing on facilitating student applications, monitoring checklists, and focusing on strategies for transitioning to HS.
  • Coordinate and supervise supplemental programming and events, often coordinating with community volunteers, such as parent educational workshops, financial aid workshops, practice interview and essay writing workshops, a FAFSA night for college students’ parents, etc.
  • Facilitate financial aid applications for HS applicants (SSS and FACTS), for current HS students, for college applicants (FAFSA and CSS profiles), and also for current college students.
  • Manage process for tracking graduates’ academic progress by collecting students’ report cards from HS’s and maintaining a spreadsheet that records each student’s status.
  • Manage a comprehensive, user-friendly database of graduate test data, including scores from MAPS, Stanford 10, ERB, HSPT, SSAT, SAT, ACT, such that longitudinal trends may be easily identified.
  • Create and maintain a system for tracking regular and ongoing outreach/ communication with graduates.
  • Assist DGS with coordinating outreach and interventions with graduates, including connecting graduates with tutors, organizing and supervising graduate after-school study hall, and coordinating the mailing of care packages to boarding HS and college students and GSP program brochures to families.
  • Create visual displays to publically celebrate the achievements of our graduates.
  • Manage seasonal admissions processes for incoming 5th grade Esperanza students; includes recruitment within the community of Lawrence, vetting of families’ financial eligibility, organizing open house events, review of income eligibility, scheduling of family interviews, and oversight of the lottery.



QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidate will be strongly mission-driven, deeply committed to middle school education, and have experience working with independent schools and urban education. The successful candidate will exhibit many of the following qualifications and experience:


  • An understanding of and appreciation for adolescent development, middle school curriculum and pedagogy, and the complex needs of middle school girls
  • Experience working in an urban school setting with a diverse student body
  • Experience with independent school admissions processes
  • Commitment and capacity to engage and educate students’ families
  • Extremely well organized and detail oriented
  • Flexibility, problem-solving skills, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Creativity, and the ability to develop and improve upon existing systems
  • A proven track record of collaboration and teamwork
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, analyze and utilize data for programmatic purposes
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, social work, or related field would be desirable
  • Spoken and written Spanish language skills desirable


COMPENSATION: This Associate Director position will be full time and year round, and as such, salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
