  Job Description

About the Position

At CAN, a team of 30 AmeriCorps College Coaches (fifteen 11th Grade Coaches and fifteen 12th Grade Coaches) provide crucial support to students as they navigate the social and academic challenges of high school and enter the intimidating college search, application, and enrollment processes.  The 11th and 12th Grade AmeriCorps College Coaches work together on-site at their assigned high school sites to implement and deliver our comprehensive curriculum and program model, including relationship building, session facilitation, intensive coaching, event planning, and tracking data related to program participation and student success.

 

AmeriCorps College Coaches facilitate weekly after school sessions, which include activities such as career and college exploration, college list development, resume and personal statement writing, campus visits and college fairs, SAT test preparation and registration, FAFSA/WASFA and scholarship application completion, individual and group advising sessions, academic coaching, and general problem-solving to remove barriers for our students. Team members will also build strong relationships with their students, as well as with stakeholders at various schools and community organizations to increase the visibility and effectiveness of the program and support individual student success. This is a full-time, AmeriCorps National Service position.

Direct Service Responsibilities

  • Recruit, select, lead and develop coaching relationships with a cohort of at least 35 students
  • Manage up to three volunteers to prepare and deliver engaging weekly 90-minute sessions based on established curriculum and high quality program goals geared toward supporting students in accessing and persisting through college graduation
  • Provide individualized support to a cohort of students both in-person and via email, phone, and social media
  • Develop a consistent follow-up and outreach plan for ensuring student and program goals are achieved
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other AmeriCorps coaches, staff, teachers, counselors, and community partners
  • Collaborate, coordinate, and facilitate various school-wide events, workshops, career talks, panels, and campus visits for students
  • Update student records, track progress, and prepare reports using Excel & student database in a timely manner
  • Serve as an advocate for students, as well as the program, organization, and national service
  • Participate in various service projects including National Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, and more

 

Training and Professional Development

  • Attend and actively participate in weekly trainings, meetings, and planning sessions
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and continuous improvement of the program and organization
  • Work with other CAN staff members and departments around organizational events and celebrations
  • Individual Professional Development trainings based on your future growth

Organizational Support

  • Work with other CAN staff members and departments around organizational events and celebrations
  • Provide general organizational support as needed, and other duties as assigned
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and continuous improvement of the program and organization

 

 

Compensation and Benefits

This is an AmeriCorps National Service position.  Members receive numerous benefits including:

  • $12,630 annual living stipend ($1,263 per month before taxes throughout the 10-month service term)

Required Qualifications and Desired Skills

  • U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree completed prior to official start date
  • Commitment to public service, civic engagement, and social justice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Energy, passion and creativity to inspire students, including the ability to facilitate engaging large group presentations and develop relationships with students
  • Experience working within diverse communities
  • Demonstrated dependability, initiative, and the ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team
  • Address potentially ambiguous situations with an open-minded and solution-focused approach
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, and social media applications
  • Knowledge of college admissions, financial aid and issues related to student success in higher education

 

Service Term and Schedule

This is a 10-month position beginning August 14th, 2017 and ending on June 15th, 2018. Typical hours for this position are 9am to 5pm, Monday through Thursday at your school site with Fridays spent doing professional development throughout King County. Some evening and weekend hours, as well as travel to/from school sites, meetings and community events may be required.
