  Job Description

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Vice President, Companion Animals in the Companion Animals department. The main responsibility of this position is to provide strategic and operational leadership to the department operations, as well as the development, implementation, and evaluation of companion animal’s policy, campaigns and programs, and fundraising, which focuses on identifying and addressing issues and seizing new opportunities for transformational change for companion animals.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Leading the department’s strategic and operational priorities for outreach, promotion, and partnership development/retention, ensuring that the department’s activities and functions align with the organization’s overall strategy and priorities;
  • Directing all legislative and policy efforts on the local, state and federal levels;
  • Conducting required/effective management responsibilities, ensuring that all activities are compliant in regards to budget/fiscal expectations, policies, standards, and procedures;
  • Ensuring that the responsibilities, authority and accountability of all direct reports are defined and understood;
  • Ensuring the development and fostering of strong and collaborative relationships to facilitate the identification and implementation of strategies that support objectives;
  • Strengthening ties with the sheltering, rescue, and spay/neuter communities;
  • Cultivating and leading the Companion Animals Advisory;
  • Working with fundraising departments to ensure that messaging supports fundraising growth, and websites are integrated, easy to traverse, and designed to maximize giving opportunities, and that fundraising and marketing materials reflect brand consistency;
  • Planning, developing, and executing all activities related to Animal Care Expo;
  • Keeping abreast of trends relevant to the operations and strategies and integrate appropriate measures to implement changes/innovations;
  • Establishing internal processes, policies, and operational systems within the department, conducting reviews and evaluating/identifying opportunities to implement changes/additions to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency;
  • Representing and/or making presentations at forums and events in order to develop and maintain communications and to cultivate and foster strong and collaborative relationships.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experience required. Advanced degree preferred;
  • Minimum ten years of related progressive job-related experience with responsibility for staff management, program development, fund raising, and complex strategic development; preferably in a similar work environment and field of work;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing/implementing operational processes, preparing/managing budgets, facilitating and driving innovation, resolving problems, and achieving results through cross-functional coordination/collaboration and team development/management;
  • Strategic thinker and capacity builder with a focus on empowering staff, volunteers, and the public to create positive change in communities nationwide;
  • Collaborator and bridge-builder with a proven track record of navigating diverse viewpoints, gathering input and synthesizing it to identify common ground and implement solutions;
  • Thorough knowledge of and commitment to animal protection;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations to achieve results;
  • Knowledge of effective budget development and management processes;
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, time management skills, and the ability to manage changing priorities and issues with time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • Demonstrated propensity to be creative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities;
  • Strong business acumen, negotiation, mediation skills, attention to detail, and a focus on achieving quality outcomes;
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to translate information into a meaningful, understandable context and message;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • Ability to travel regularly, sometimes extensively.
