Job Description

Greenpeace USA (GPUS) has an exciting opening for a Senior Accountant on the Finance team. This role is primarily responsible for coordinating with Greenpeace staff to ensure all transactions are accurately reflected in the accounting system and all budgets and financial expenditure reports are completed timely, investments, cash disbursements, bank reconciliations and tracking of grants, the compilation of special reports, and other accounting duties in the areas of revenue recognition, net assets, and balance sheet reconciliations.

This is an exempt, full time role based in Washington, DC and reports to the Assistant Controller.

This role will:

  • Play a significant role in monthly, quarterly and annual closing processes by processing and overseeing a variety of journal entries, reconciliations, master accounts and petty cash entries
  • Oversee the administration of the corporate credit card program and serve as administrator for all organizational accounting and financial technology systems
  • Develop and maintain a number of internal reports, identifying trends and patterns and troubleshooting any potential challenges
  • Ensure that a proper system of internal controls is maintained surrounding the cash disbursement process, and escalate unusual challenges as needed
  • Perform research and provide relevant support on financial and accounting related matters including responding to requests from internal and external stakeholders as requested by the Asst Controller/Controller
  • Partners with the Asst. Controller/ Controller to prepare global Billings, invoices and account reconciliations Supports audits and filings of federal reports (e.g form 990)
  • Develop systems, processes and operations to ensure compliance with all applicable state, federal and international laws and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned and as appropriate for the role

Minimum requirements  include:

  • Bachelor of Science in accounting or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the nonprofit space, preferably in grant-intensive operations.
  • Advanced Excel skills are required with an ability to create and maintain complex spreadsheets.

Additional qualifications  include, but are not limited to:

  • Experience with grant reporting and administration is a plus, but not required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to receive instruction from supervisor and prioritize responsibilities and time as required.
  • A strong attention to detail and willingness to support the Finance team in delivering high quality deliverables.
  • High level of integrity and work ethic with a professional attitude in all dealings.
