  Job Description

The Grow Brooklyn (GB) Free Tax Program, also known as VITA, offers free tax preparation to households making $60,000 annually or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and undocumented immigrant taxpayers. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. One important goal of the program is to assist eligible taxpayers in applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can result in a substantial refund for low-income working families and individuals.

During the 2018 tax season, GB expects to open at least 5 main locations in Central and South Brooklyn, as well as the Lower East Side in Manhattan, for approximately 100 hours a week for 13 weeks. Each site is located in the offices of a partner organization.

Position Description. Intake Specialists have a large responsibility for VITA operations as the gatekeepers at their site. S/he directly is responsible for assuring that every client is aware of all the services that are available to them in a timely manner.  Also, the Intake Specialist oversees client sign-in, assists clients in the completion of the Intake Sheet and surveys, and directs clients to on-site complementary services when appropriate.  The Intake Coordinator reports to the Site Coordinator and works towards the goal of ensuring quality, consistent tax preparation throughout tax season. S/he must handle the intake of taxpayers at high Wages vary between $11 to $13/hour depending on qualifications.

A list of Intake responsibilities includes:

  • Greet clients with respect and courtesy.
  • Develop a log to sign in clients needing assistance.
  • Photocopy pertinent information/documents needed for tax return preparation.
  • Screen client information for eligibility and needed documents on a first come first served basis.
  • Survey clients to determine the type of assistance needed and what tax forms that will be required to complete their tax forms.
  • Ensure that clients complete a Client Intake/Interview Sheet and assist in completion if needed.
  • Sign in taxpayers and indicate the level of complexity based on income level and support documentation.
  • Monitor site traffic to ensure that sufficient time is allowed for each signed-in taxpayer to receive assistance.
  • Refer clients with complex returns to a tax practitioner, but not a specific person or firm.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • Retrieve data from a computer.
  • Report any problems that arise to the Site Coordinator.
  • Refer clients to other services being provided at the site or by our partners.

 Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in high volume, retail-oriented customer service
  • Hardworking and self-directed, with strong organizational skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to Grow Brooklyn’s mission and the people we serve
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills as well as good computer skills
  • Multilingual highly desirable (Spanish, Creole, etc.)
  • Enthusiastic, energetic and outgoing with a "can do" attitude
  • A sense of humor, creativity, resourcefulness, compassion, and patience are absolute requirements for this job
