  Job Description

Position Summary:  Foodshare has an exciting and challenging career opportunity for a Director of Giving / Major Gifts Officer in our Bloomfield office.  Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Giving / Major Gifts Officer is responsible for securing revenue to meet critical fundraising goals from existing donors and targeted prospects capable of making a major gift (defined as gifts > $5,000 in one year or >$25,000 over 5 years).  This individual will also be responsible for overseeing and supervising the Giving Department.  The right candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, the proven ability to think strategically, and a competitive, results-oriented spirit.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and cultivate an active portfolio of up to 125 major donor prospects.

    • Use elements of the “moves management” system to maintain progress toward solicitation; manage stewardship plan; meet quarterly goals for face-to-face solicitations.

    • Work with team members and Communications Department to develop persuasive presentations for individuals and groups ensuring cohesion of messaging.

    • Design and implement major donor-related programs and cultivation events and activities.

    • Clearly articulate Foodshare’s mission, culture, values, and programs in all meetings, presentations and donor conversations.

  • Develop and manage a planned giving program for Foodshare.

    • Provide donors with estate planning information and facilitate giving through wills, insurance, retirement plans, and other planned gift options.

    • Create a targeted marketing campaign for these opportunities.

  • Play an active management role for the organization.

    • Provide leadership and direct supervision to the Giving Department.  Build a cohesiveness within the team, ensuring all positions, strengths, and revenue streams are working as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    • Work with Giving Team to set and track individual goals for their area of responsibility.  Develop departmental work plans.  Regularly evaluate the accomplishments of the team’s goals and duties.

    • Serve on the leadership team to actively participate in issues affecting the organization.

    • Develop and administer the budget for the Giving Department.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline, with a preference for an advanced degree.

  • 5-10 years of professional experience required.  Supervisory and leadership experience required.

  • Experience with major donors strongly preferred, but not required.

Key Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point).  Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge a plus.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct public presentations.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, prioritize, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines.

  • Experience in thinking creatively, in developing engagement strategies for major donors, and in seeking funding from non-traditional sources.

  • Knowledge of non-profit fundraising practices, procedures, and legal and ethical obligations.

  • High energy and passion for Foodshare’s mission is essential.

  • Intimate knowledge of the Greater Hartford community preferred – philanthropic, business, and non-profit.
