This key role will lead and oversee the Somatics and Healing Arts department of the Esalen Institute, Massage School, and the Practitioner’s Association. This position will report to the General Manager and is a strategic member of the operations team.
What will this role do?
Have responsibility for the operation and profitability of a ~ $1M P&L including massage session revenue, education, membership association and retail product line.
Develop long-range business plans, goals, objectives, priorities, and recommendations for the massage school healing arts program, and related areas
Effectively manage and direct a team of up to four direct reports and thirty practitioner
Monitor various projects to ensure maximum effectiveness and compliance
Engage with all levels of staff to ensure the values, vision, and mission of Esalen are upheld
Responsible for the guest service experience, profitability and smooth running operations of:
Maintain a high level of operational integrity, accountability and transparency
Ensure fiscal discipline, budgetary control and financial integrity
Partner with the Operations team to contribute to a seamless and creative interface between healing arts and the efforts of all other departments at Esalen
Directs projects for the purpose of ensuring completion within established time frames, project design and budget.
Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
Oversee personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of team and achieving objectives within budget
Presents information for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls
Recommends new hires, promotions, termination and transfers for the purpose of maintaining staffing needs and productivity of the workforce
Communicates and creates a free flowing environment for effective exchange of information, up and down, and across the organization. Holds responsibility as the primary liaison to interpret Massage School/Healing Arts policies, disseminate all relevant information and answer staff member questions
Conduct needs assessment to identify knowledge, skills, behaviors, and competencies required in selecting or designing healing arts curriculum to meet seminarian needs
Identify, write and/or prepare as necessary related policies, procedures, curriculum, guides and other associated materials
Plan, set priorities, organize, delegate, and follow-through to completion on all areas of responsibility in a timely manner
In absence of Guest Services Director, oversee Guest Services areas
Other various tasks as assigned
Qualifications + Requirements + Skills
Proven leader in a somatics and healing arts profession with a track record of taking spa environment to higher levels of excellence in all aspect of service
At least 5 years of director level experience in a Spa Director position working in a similar type of education center, retreat center, hotel, or hospitality industry
International experience a plus
Working knowledge and experience with spa operations, financials, P&L, and business development
Know, understand, and avidly support the mission of Esalen
Appreciate the complexities of leading in a work environment that is both remote and residential

Management and leadership experience with spa and healing arts teams
Management and leadership experience with guest services responsibilities to include reservations, housekeeping, security, and hospitality operations is helpful
Highly competent in interpersonal skills, conflict resolution and non violent communication
Proven experience planning and managing projects
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a physically demanding environment; ability to lift up to 30 pounds; maneuver on uneven ground, stand for long periods of time; sitting at a desk and working on computers and answering phones.
