This key role will lead and coach the operations of Reservations, Reception, Housekeeping, Retail, and Gate/Security. This position will report directly to the General Manager of Esalen and be a key member of the Executive team.
What will this role do?
Create and champion guest service practices that both reflect the Esalen style of authenticity in service while embracing a style of service that is intuitive, empathic, compassionate and creative (service from the heart)
Support of the General Manager and executive team
Engage with all levels of staff to ensure the values, vision, and mission of Esalen are upheld
Responsible for the guest service experience and smooth running operations of:
Maintain a high level of operational integrity, accountability and transparency
Ensure fiscal discipline, budgetary control and financial integrity
Partner with the Operations team to contribute to a seamless and creative interface between guest services and the efforts of all other departments at Esalen
Contribute to the strategic management process, which guides the development and implementation of the Esalen vision, mission, goals and strategies
Develops long and short range plans/programs for the purpose of ensuring that Esalen resources are effectively utilized.
Directs projects for the purpose of ensuring completion within established time frames, project design and budget.
Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of team and achieving objectives within budget
Presents information for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls
Recommends new hires, promotions, termination and transfers for the purpose of maintaining staffing needs and productivity of the workforce
Communicates and creates a free flowing environment for effective exchange of information, up and down, and across the organization. Holds responsibility as the primary liaison to interpret Guest Services policies, disseminate all relevant information and answer staff member questions
Plan, set priorities, organize, delegate, and follow-through to completion on all areas of responsibility in a timely manner
Overnight onsite Manager on Duty (MOD) coverage as needed
Other various tasks as assigned
Qualifications + Requirements + Skills
Proven leader in a guest services profession with a track record of taking organizations to higher levels of excellence in all aspect of service.
At least 5 years of director level experience in a guest services position working in a similar type of education center, retreat center, hotel, or hospitality industry.
Know, understand, and avidly support the mission of Esalen.
Appreciate the complexities of leading in a work environment that is both remote and residential.

Management and leadership experience with teams responsible for guest services to include reservations, housekeeping, healing arts, and hospitality operations.
Highly competent in interpersonal skills, conflict resolution and non violent communication.
Proven experience planning and managing projects.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a physically demanding environment; ability to lift up to 30 pounds; maneuver on uneven ground, stand for long periods of time; sitting at a desk and working on computers and answering phones.
