  Job Description

Location:    Montgomery. AL /Atlanta, GA 


The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is the premiere U.S. organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists – including the Ku Klux Klan, the neo-Nazi movement, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, black separatists, antigovernment militias, Christian Identity adherents and others. We publish investigative reports, train law enforcement officers and share key intelligence and offer expert analysis to the media and public. The SPLC seeks a full-time Research Analyst (RA). 

The RA works closely with both the intel and editorial staff to produce materials for publication. The RA is responsible for collecting, inputting and maintaining data on various extremist groups and will work with the department’s writers by providing ideas and background for possible stories in Hatewatch and other SPLC publications. A significant responsibility is the collection of information and accompanying analysis regarding extremist groups in the United States for the annual Year in Hate issue of the Intelligence Report. Other special projects will arise. 


  • Writes and conducts investigations for IP and SPLC publishing outlets
  • Collects, inputs and maintains data via various sources
  • Provides research on general and special projects
  • Analyzes information and prepares reports on various subjects
  • Works with writers on research and story ideas
  • Answers correspondence and inquiries
  • Monitors various sources for intelligence, threats and/or posted material on SPLC 


Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor of Arts degree
  • Demonstrated investigative skills
  • Demonstrated writing ability
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Computer literate
  • Database management experience a plus
  • Must be thorough and have continual attention-to-detail when entering data
  • Must be a team player
  • Good news judgment
  • Commitment to the mission of the SPLC
