Established in 1977, the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (Astraea) is one of the first women’s funds in the world and the only solely dedicated to LBTQI rights globally. We support brilliant and brave grantee partners across the globe who challenge oppression and seed change. We work for racial, economic, social and gender justice because we all deserve to live our lives freely, without fear, and with dignity.
As a LBTQI women’s fund, Astraea uniquely fuels groups at the nexus of feminist and LBTQI movements. We shift power and resources to LBTQI and feminist activists so that they can build strong, intersectional movements that combat violence and discrimination, counter structural economic and social inequalities and drive transformational cultural change. The first grantmaker to hundreds of organizations, Astraea plays a catalytic role for LBTQI groups – particularly those led by lesbian, bisexual and queer women, trans and gender nonconforming folks, intersex people, and Black, Indigenous and people of color. Our grantmaking, capacity building, media and communications, and philanthropic advocacy programs support their work to build powerful movements for justice. In our 44-year history we have granted over $49 million to LBTQI activists and artists.
In partnership with our activist partners and allies, Astraea will be deepening our work to strengthen LBTQI feminist organizing on the African continent and facilitate connections with wider feminist movements. Through activist-led research and convenings, we will build a deeper analysis of backlash and anti-rights mobilization on LGBTQI and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) issues, how LBTQI groups are responding, and how to support stronger cross-movement collaboration and resistance strategies.
Consultant Roles and Responsibilities
We seek to engage an Africa Movement-Building Coordinator to lead the design and implementation of this exciting new project, working in close collaboration with the Astraea programs team. The ideal candidate would be an activist with commitment to and knowledge of queer and feminist movements; possesses and applies feminist leadership principles to movement building and is curious about how we can strengthen creative resistance strategies and build resilience within our movements.
○ Identify and engage research partners, supporting them to ensure smooth implementation of the research work plan.
○ Identify and engage an activist advisory group to inform priorities of the project
○ Plan all aspects of activist convenings, from agenda development to logistical coordination
