ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and educational programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include group fitness, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue-generating ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 45 communities across 24 states.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Phoenix is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to manage the launch and ongoing operations of a Phoenix chapter in San Diego, CA. The primary responsibility of the Program Manager is to launch and sustain Phoenix programs in San Diego, including ensuring program quality as well as developing and member and volunteer pipelines. The Program Manager will also be responsible for donor engagement and executing local fundraising efforts. Excellent social skills and the ability to connect with partner organizations, donors, participants, and the general public are essential. The ideal candidate will have leadership experience and familiarity with one or more athletic disciplines such as group fitness, rock climbing, yoga, hiking, cycling, running, surfing, or boxing. The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and adaptable to ever-changing situations. A strong connection to The Phoenix mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- With support from regional and national staff, work to build a robust sober active community in San Diego, with a priority on developing member and volunteer pipelines
- Leverage national marketing talent and assets to establish and execute marketing strategy to advance awareness, member acquisition and volunteer acquisition
- Develop a robust volunteer program, including recruiting, training, and supporting a solid and sustainable base of volunteers
- Oversee/administer in-person and virtual events each week. These may include rock climbing (indoors or outdoors), yoga, hiking, mountain or road biking, running, group fitness classes, boxing, Olympic lifting, meditation, or other group activities
- Help to devise and implement strategies to spread the word about The Phoenix locally (including targeted outreach, social media campaigns, etc.)
- Build collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships in the local recovery and fitness communities through partnerships with treatment centers, gymnasiums, yoga studios, recovery-based nonprofit organizations, and other mission-aligned organizations to improve access to recovery support for those living in the San Diego area
- With guidance from the National Development Team, engage with local donors and foundations that advance giving and sustainability (to include private donations, grants, peer-to-peer fundraising, corporate sponsorships, and capital campaigns)
- Ensure general daily administrative needs of the chapter are met, including scheduling of programs, events, and outreach activities
- Supervise staff, including hiring, training, conducting reviews, encouraging personal and professional development, and handling discipline and termination as needed
- Ensure program spaces are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming) and all events are in alignment with The Phoenix's vision and values and adhere to appropriate standards
- Analyze performance of chapter and programs and provide feedback, guidance, and training to impact results
- Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings and programming and partnership team meetings as needed
- Review and respond promptly, accurately, and cordially to all inquiries
- Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
- Fulfill other duties and manage small- to large-scale projects as assigned
- Work evening and weekend hours as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
- Community relations skills and willingness to initiate introductions with potential partners
- Experience coaching, instructing, or leading in one or more of the above-named disciplines is preferred but not required
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
- Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
- Organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
- Desire to pursue personal and professional development opportunities
- Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email
- Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills
- Experience with budgets, program management, and nonprofit management preferred
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- Certifications in relevant athletic disciplines (e.g., CF-L1, L-2, or L-3; NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE Personal Trainer; AMGA-CWI, SPI, or Rock Guide; IMBA-L1; or YT-200) is a bonus
- First Aid Certification (e.g. WFR, WFA, CPR) preferred but not required
- Bilingual/multilingual preferred
