APLA Health’s mission is to achieve health care equity and promote well-being for the LGBT and other underserved communities and people living with and affected by HIV. We are a nonprofit, federally qualified health center serving more than 14,000 people annually. Life Skills Specialist
Under the Direction of the Program Manager of Housing Support Services, promote the health, well-being, and housing stability of people living with HIV/AIDS through the provision of life skills training including but not limited to, personal finance counseling, basic budgeting, employment counseling and continuing education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Training and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field required (Psychology, Sociology, Health Sciences, or a related field - required), Masters Degree preferred. Demonstrate a minimum of two years of experience working with low-income individuals. Experience developing curricula, working with clients at both the individual and group level, and experience working in a nonprofit environment a plus. This position also requires specialized training in the areas of personal finance counseling, basic budgeting, employment assistance, and continuing education. Qualified candidates should also demonstrate experience working with homeless, mentally ill and substance-abusing clients. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
HIV related issues and concerns; services for which clients would be eligible including but not limited to the Los Angeles Housing continuum, public benefits, back to work opportunities, primary care resources, personal finance, and continuing education and counseling techniques. The position requires knowledge of the internet and Microsoft Office programs.
Work in a fast-paced environment with an attention to detail, coordinate multiple tasks, meet assigned deadlines, learn specific systems quickly and thoroughly, communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds as well as with government representatives, use database computer software programs Bilingual/Bicultural English/Spanish preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is primarily an office position that requires only occasional bending, reaching, stooping, lifting and moving of office materials weighing 25 pounds or less. Driving local distances is required when hosting workshops and visiting sites where Housing Specialty Services are provided. The position requires daily use of a desktop computer, provided by APLA and requires entering, viewing, and revising text and graphics on the computer terminal and on paper. Some weekend and weeknight hours required to attend special events and meetings. Some domestic travel will be required.
Must possess a valid California driver’s license; proof of auto liability insurance; and have the use of a personal vehicle for work related purposes.
