PEN/Faulkner Foundation is a nonprofit literary organization that promotes a lifelong love of reading and a connection to writing through public events, in-school education, and public promotion of exceptional literary achievement. We annually administer the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, one of the highest honors available to American fiction writers. Writers in Schools is a literary arts outreach program of PEN/Faulkner that brings literature to life for diverse communities through reading, conversation, and a personal connection to a visiting writer.
The Spanish Language & Latinx Communities Intern will support our Spanish Language Reading Group, as well as the expansion of our Writers in Schools Spanish language and Latinx authors programming. The reading group is intended to be a mix of native and native-level Spanish speakers alongside students who are learning Spanish. As an offshoot of our Writers in Schools Program, we will provide books and reading packets to the students and bring in authors to discuss their work. Featured authors will be Latinx.
Researching Latinx authors and books for school-based programs
Drafting and translating curriculum for students of different grades
Supporting translation of materials and evaluations into Spanish
Outreach to Spanish-speaking communities in the DC area, both for volunteer recruitment, participant recruitment, and writer recruitment
Attending certain Writers in Schools sessions to serve as staff support and as an author ambassador
Assisting with administrative tasks in the office, as needed
The ideal candidate has:
Native or native-level fluency in Spanish
Excellent writing and editing skills, including in Spanish
Excellent organizational skills
An interest in outreach or marketing to Spanish-speaking and Latinx communities
The ability and drive to work independently and as part of a team
A passion for literature
A good sense of humor
Hours: 8 - 10 hours a week. Compensation: Unpaid
