Nature Trail and Wetland Park
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
Sankofa Community Development Corporation works to build healthier communities for generations to come.
Maintain nature trail and wetland park, wetland nursery plants, and Sankofa gardens
Create and update wetland plants gardens in garden planning platform.
Develop plans for landscaping with perennials, trees, annuals to improve and beautify the wetland park environment.
Follow garden policies, production and non-crop vegetation, open field and high tunnel, pre-, post harvest, and composting.
Consult with wetland ecologist advisors, advisory committee, and master gardener advisor for site plan development.
Develop timely reports of harvesting, planting, and park status and present in staff and advisory committee meetings.
Develop planting schedule.
Oversight and coordination of the following:
Maintain cleanliness and order of garden site areas, including garden equipment after each use.
Oversight of safety of garden staff and assistants by ensuring essential protective gear is used, including wearing mask, hats, safety glasses, and protective clothing as needed.
Coordinate planting within reported schedule.
Ensure Sankofa garden properties are secured and maintained.
Professional operation and use of garden equipment.
Lead proactive development of Sankofa gardens.
Ensure usage of safety measures with caution when using gardening equipment and tools as necessary for garden staff to avoid injury.
Germinate seeds to produce starts.
Grow and harvest edible and nonedible flowers, plants, shrubs and trees.
Develop growing and planting schedule for all plants.
Prepare seed beds, transfer plants to containers, till the soil, receive and unload soil shipments and other garden products, propagate new plants through grafting and other measures, prune plants and trees.
Analyze plants to determine nutrient deficiencies, disease/pest infestation and consult with garden advisor to determine best measures to remedy the problems.
Clean and care gardening tools and equipment to keep them in good condition.
Strategically place plants on Sankofa property sites to create natural-looking settings.
Conduct ongoing research/study to remain knowledgeable about plant needs and challenges: soil conditions, irrigation needs, nutrient requirements, light intensity,
plant pathology and harmful and beneficial insects.
Prune and weed areas to keep plants healthy and vigorous.
Unearth and transplant plants, flowers, trees and shrubs.
Keep the landscape around the gardens well-maintained.
Build and maintain garden compost.
Utilize pre and post harvesting practices.
Maintain cleanliness of garden site areas.
Assist with garden education workshops.
Harvests, cleans and bundles produce and herbs for the Markets.
Adheres to scientific horticulture methods.
Develop management and supervision training.
Research and remains informed of current gardening practices.
Study sustainable garden practices.
Knowledge, Skills, Capabilities
3-5 years of gardening experience.
Ability to take directives and work in collaboration with Sankofa advisors and consultants.
Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups and be a good team player.
Ability to bend, pull, push, stoop and stand for long periods of time.
Computer skills, including familiarity with current technology and computer software.
Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Interest in systems development to improve Sankofa’s growth.
Interest in working with and engaging with community.
Planning and organizing skills.
Remains open to using diverse gardening practices
Strong work ethic.
Understanding of principles of social justice and equity.
