This is a part-time position, 25 hours per week, and is located in Lowell, MA. Hours are flexible. The position is salaried and includes benefits.
Summary: The LA Family Advocate assists individuals and families in accessing and navigating resources and learning self-advocacy skills, and works with resident groups to bring in resources and information, build capacity and promote inclusion and diversity.

While promoting the protective factors to prevent and reduce child maltreatment and abuse, the Family Advocate focuses on supporting and strengthening families in need, including: educating them about available services and how to access those services, shepherding families through the maze of providers and paperwork needed to access services, advocating for families with service providers to ensure their needs are met. This might include working with families to create a transportation plan, serving as a translator for families or working with community partners to find adequate translation, partnering with service providers to address issues of language and cultural sensitivity, connecting families to other families who have been in the same situation to help facilitate peer mentoring, teaching families how to advocate for themselves, and informing local service providers about any information or concerns gathered from families in order to make services more culturally appropriate and family-friendly. This could also include organizing and facilitating a family support group or parent education workshops. All of this helps families manage stress and build resilience.p.
As a member of the Lowell Alliance team, the Family Advocate also provides key feedback on issues and experiences of residents they are working with to the team, and helps with efforts to identify and reduce barriers to resident involvement with the public schools and in civic life, through parent teacher organizations (PTOs), tenant associations, other community action groups, and local government.
Specific duties and tasks:
Build relationships with local service agencies and local leaders to identify and reach families in need and support successful referrals. Building relationships with faith communities may also be a means of connecting with residents and families seeking resource navigation services.
Maintain intake files and progress reports.
Follow new developments in communities you’re working with, either through individual leaders, resident experiences, or news and other sources.
Collaborate with organizations to provide parenting resources, as well as opportunities for education and advocacy.
Help recruit for parent education classes or other programs that promote financial, mental health or social wellness.
Lowell Diaper Bank – help promote in day-to-day work, staff 2 times per month, possibly assist with fundraising/diaper donation efforts. Mobile Food Pantry - coordinate with local food bank and distribute food, 2-3 hours per week.
Along with Lowell Alliance staff and community partners, help organize community events, such as National Night Out, Khmer New Year, community dinners.
Help promote community events, neighborhood group meetings, volunteerism and advocacy efforts through flyering, tabling, door-to-door outreach on occasion etc. For example: neighborhood clean-ups, get-out-the-vote campaigns, and events such as Khmer New Year, Points of Light, National Night Out, etc. In addition, to help promote and refer interested residents to apply for our leadership development program Empower: Building Leaders, Strengthening Communities program.
Assist Lowell Alliance’s marketing and outreach efforts, including giving feedback on materials, the website, and suggesting occasional blog content to help raise awareness about Lowell Alliance in the community and tell local stories.
Other responsibilities as needed. Some evenings and weekends.
Bi-lingual Spanish/English or Khmer/English candidates are strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred, with at least 1-2 years relevant experience in Human Services, Social Work or Community Development. Some work experience may qualify. This position requires the ability to maintain positive relationships and work effectively with low-income families from varying cultural backgrounds in a warm and respectful manner. Flexibility, empathy, and the ability to work with a wide range of people in a variety of different situations are essential. Small group facilitation and training experience would be helpful. Must be well-organized and demonstrate the ability to take initiative and work independently. Experience working in the Lowell community and familiarity with local social service agencies and other resources preferred. Willingness and ability to work evenings and occasional weekends required. Must own a car and possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
