About IDEPSCA: The Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) is a nonprofit community based organization whose purpose is to promote self-determination in the Latino community in Southern California politically, culturally, and economically using popular education methodology. We promote the development of collective solutions to community problems, working specifically with day laborers and household workers in Los Angeles.
Overview: IDEPSCA is looking for a cross program organizer to support its day laborer and household worker member base as well as local community in the following areas:
Outreach and education around minimum wage, overtime, and sick leave in California and Los Angeles City and County
Support in completing and submitting wage claim forms at State, County and City Level
Support in mediation between workers and employers
Support in actions related to worker justice issues (ie rallies, asambleas)
Job Responsibilities include:
Developing educational/organizing materials including fact sheets, toolkits, action alerts, blog posts, and social media content in order to educate, organize, and mobilize members and allies around policy and practice priorities and campaigns.
Providing trainings for community members on how to conduct policy advocacy with decision makers
Helping Organize and attend advocacy visits with state and local officials and provide testimony to administrative agencies and governing bodies
Tracking national, state, and local developments relevant to immigrant worker rights.
Establishing and nurturing relationships with members, allies, organizations, and coalitions
Attend and actively participate in meetings and coalitions that focus on immigrant worker rights
Excellent planning and organization skills.
Ability to facilitate collective planning, decision-making, and evaluation processes with diverse stakeholders and organizations.
Excellent communication skills; ability to assess and discern multiple requests from various stakeholders and prioritize and coordinate responses accordingly.
Bilingual in English and Spanish(written and spoken)
Familiarity with Popular Education
Ability to travel within Los Angeles City, County, and California (either driving with valid license or via public/provided transportation
IDEPSCA would like to hire an organizer with at least one year experience as an organizer as a volunteer, intern or staff within an organization/collective. Applicants should have experience working in coalitions and be familiar with the issues of low wage immigrant workers in Los Angeles. This includes experience working across culture, class, language, race, gender and sexual orientation. Must be willing to work irregular hours including early mornings, evenings and weekends.
