  Job Description

Summary of Job:

The groomer will be responsible for dog grooming that will be scheduled by the Community Clinic for owned animals as well as those waiting for adoption at the LA/SPCA.   

 

Essential Functions

  • Interact with owners to understand any requests or special needs; offer additional services or products as appropriate.
  • Perform baths safely including: use of proper water temperature, eye protectants for the patient, proper ear cleaning method, and proper use of dryers
  • Provide additional grooming related services including: clip nails, express animal glands, cleaning ears. 
  • Proper restraint of patient when on the grooming table or when in the washing tub.
  • Identifying when an animal is in distress.
  • Safely grooming sedated patients and monitoring them under sedation.
  • Spot cleaning holding kennels and deep cleaning the kennel after each dog.
  • Enter and update animal records as needed
  • Responsible for maintenance of supplies and equipment provided by LA/SPCA including clippers, blades, and scissors
  • Ensure cleanliness of the work area before the end of shift.
  • Promote and support the LA/SPCA's programs and mission
  • Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor.
  • Work courteously and cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all situations.
  • Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience preferred.

 

Minimum Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):

  • Animal handling experience preferred
  • Completion of groomer training or certificate; on the job training acceptable. 
  • Successful completion of a criminal background and drug test.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Must be personable, patient, and able to get along well with a variety of people.
  • Handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to follow directions and be able to work unsupervised.
  • Schedule flexibility including weekends.
  • The ability to remain pleasant and calm even in stressful situations.
  • Mental and physical flexibility is a must.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to work around all animals.
  • Grooming requires bending, kneeling, standing for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; stand, sit, push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping.
  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants.

 

Working Environment: (or Working Conditions)

  • Must be aware that the grooming area, at times, will have a constant high noise level, possess strong odors, and involves the use of water.
  • Daily interaction with dogs and cats that may be frightened.
  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches.
