Job Opportunity Field Naturalist

The Irvine Ranch Conservancy is a non-profit, non-advocacy organization with 50 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees and nearly 400 volunteers. Our mission is to protect, restore, and enhance the natural resources of nearly 50,000 acres of protected open space on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks in perpetuity, and to provide diverse opportunities for compatible public enjoyment through scientific, recreational, and educational initiatives and programs.

 

We have an exciting opportunity for a full time Field Naturalist to be a part of an organization that works with partners to connect people to the land while helping landowners protect and restore. This entry level position will have primary responsibility for coordinating and leading a variety of activities led by Conservancy-certified volunteers and staff and offered on LetsGoOutside.org, including Wilderness Access Days as well as community events and outreach booths. The Field Naturalist will provide information to the public and volunteers on resource values and public access policies in the wildland areas and may coordinate volunteers related to these activities. This position will be required to assist with volunteer training, habitat restoration, trail work, research, fire prevention, and outreach. The Field Naturalist must be able to operate with tact and diplomacy while working with a wide variety of people. The Field Naturalist will provide support in all aspects of visitor relations and public access programs and will work directly with volunteers. This person would need to be flexible and available to undertake regular evening and weekend work. Regular work schedule will include most weekends.

 

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Education Bachelor's degree in relevant field or high school diploma plus two years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience
    • Experience with or knowledge of natural communities and leading programs in natural communities with a variety of people, including a wide range of age groups.
    • Ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment, including power and light construction tools, is a plus.
    • Ability to lead activities such as long and/or strenuous hikes or mountain bike rides over variable and rugged terrain
    • Interpretive experience is a plus
    • Knowledge of Spanish or Chinese or Korean is a plus.
  • Communication Skills Excellent communication and presentation skills to a wide variety of public. Enthusiastic, confident, and energetic.
  • Teamwork Outstanding interpersonal skills; extraordinary level of diplomacy, tact, and poise. A service-based and collaborative orientation toward work performance.
  • Organization Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and be punctual.
  • Problem Solving Ability to complete tasks and resolve problems within assigned timeframes as well as able to handle potentially challenging human and natural resource issues in a wilderness setting.
  • License/Certificates
    • Valid Driver's License. Ability to obtain a class B license with passenger endorsement a plus.
    • Ability to obtain CPR & First Aid certification.
    • Willingness to obtain a National Association for Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide certification a plus.
