The successful candidate will support our interdisciplinary team in developing policy solutions that advance health, equity, and sustainability in low-income communities and communities of color across the nation.

Position Description

Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, the Copywriter & Editor will be an efficient, experienced, and skilled editor who can improve content with a focus on making it accessible to a wide variety of audiences – from targeted materials on legal or policy topics to simple distillations of our work for a broad constituency. Our audiences can include policymakers, public health practioners, staff from governmental agencies, healthy community advocates, and city and county attorneys.

The Copywriter & Editor will be the primary expert on ChangeLab Solutions’ written communication style. Working closely with our communications team, the Copywriter & Editor will collaborate with program staff (staff with legal, planning, policy, or public health backgrounds) to develop public health and public policy materials that are sophisticated, clear, and well written. The Copywriter & Editor will lead the editorial review phase of our fast-paced product development cycle.

Specific Responsibilities

The Copywriter & Editor will have responsibilities in the following areas, with the potential to focus their work on a subset of them, based on interests and skills: 

  • Technical and developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading a wide variety of materials and texts for our law and policy audiences
  • Writing and editing quality control for the organization
  • Working with the Senior Communications Manager on the organization’s fast-paced product development cycle
  • Working closely with and providing support to our Marketing & Media Writer
  • Collaborating with program, development, and executive staff on writing and editing projects
  • Managing and updating the organization’s editorial style guide
  • Translating technical content into accessible language for a wide audience

Required Skills and Attributes

Candidates must meet all these minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in mass communication, journalism, English, marketing, public health, public policy, urban studies, or other related field. Work experience equivalent to one of these degrees may be substituted with explanation of the equivalency in the cover letter.
  • A minimum of at least 2 years of experience as a copywriter and/or editor
  • Experience adhering to style guides (AMA, AP, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and guiding others in their use
  • Excellent writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to translate technical content into accessible language for a wide audience
  • Experience editing a wide variety of copy (for example, guides, model policies, journal articles, blogs, fact sheets, web copy, social media posts, and podcast and video scripts)
  • Sharp eye for detail and an ability to collaborate with staff to ensure high-quality final products
  • Proven ability to work proactively with efficiency, flexibility, and good humor
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize projects, manage billable hours, and meet deadlines
  • Strong overall communications skills (written and oral)
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel


Desired Skills and Attributes: Preferred candidates will have some of these characteristics.

  • Experience in the nonprofit, government, public health, and/or health care sectors
  • Experience working with planning, public health, public policy and/or legal professionals
  • Experience editing fundraising and development materials
  • Experience editing scripts for presentations and editing storyboards
  • Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign
  • Ability to edit and mark-up PDFs using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC
  • Experience using a CRM database like Salesforce
  • Experience using a CMS like Drupal



This is a full-time position and includes a generous benefits package including PTO, medical, dental, vision, long-term disability insurance, life insurance, tax sheltered annuity and a flexible benefit plan. Salary range is $50,000 to $65,000 per year depending on experience.
