Summary of Job:

The Transport Driver is responsible for transporting a variable number of animals to their destination point safely and on time. The transport driver will not be driving alone but will also partner with another LASPCA driver. Together both drivers are to fairly split all duties and abide by all Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. 


Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for keeping the vehicle in safe and good working order by reporting issues as soon as one arises.
  • Perform vehicle inspections prior to transport, on return to source shelter, and upon arrival back at source shelter.
  • Monitor appetite, hydration, stools and vomit of animals while on the transport vehicle.
  • Ensure all animals on transport are comfortable and AC/heat is continuously in working order.
  • Verify that all supplies needed during transport are currently on vehicle and well stocked.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of animals at source and destination shelters.
  • While en route, remain in constant communication with both the source and destination shelters as well as the Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA) Transport Coordinator.
  • Review animal paperwork at source shelter to ensure all necessary documents have been provided by source prior to loading and departure (health certificates, vaccination and medical history.)
  • Responsible for accurate and timely record keeping (e.g. vehicle mileage, driver time, animal condition at load).
  • Maintain personal drivers log book and provide copies of log to Transport Coordinator, if necessary.
  • Accountable for company transport credit card and large sum of emergency cash stored in a safe.
  • Preserve cleanliness in the inside of the transport vehicle by disposing of soiled puppy pads once all animals are unloaded and cleaning any messes on the floor.
  • Keep outside of vehicle clean by stopping at a truck wash before returning to source shelter.
  • Promote and support the LA/SPCA's programs and mission
  • Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor.
  • Work courteously and cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all situations.
  • Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.



  • Notify Transport Coordinator or Placement Manager if any animal on the transport vehicle is showing obvious signs of sickness or concerning behavior.
  • Alert Transport Coordinator immediately about any concerns/issues with the transport vehicle.
  • Respond to Transport Coordinator within 24 hours when a transport driver is needed.




Reporting Relationships and Contacts

  • A Transport Driver shall be hired by the recommendation of the Director of Operations and the Placement Manager
  • A Transport Driver shall directly supervised by the Placement Manager.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • A current Class A commercial driver's license


Minimum Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):

  • Previous transportation experience required
  • Animal handling experience preferred
  • Successful completion of a criminal background and motor vehicle check, commercial driver medical certification, drug test, and road test.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Must be personable, patient, and able to get along well with a variety of people.
  • Handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to follow directions and be able to work unsupervised.
  • Schedule flexibility and able to drive overnight shifts.
  • Capable of being in a vehicle for an extensive amount of time and sharing a small space with another transport driver.
  • Able to rest in the same hotel room with partner transport driver.
  • The ability to remain pleasant and calm even in stressful situations.
  • Mental and physical flexibility is a must.


Physical Requirements:

  • Must be aware that the transport vehicle, at times, will be noisy and have strong odors.
  • Able to work around all animals.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; stand, sit, push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping.
  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants.


Working Environment: (or Working Conditions)

  • Must be aware that the transport vehicle, at times, will have a constant high noise level and possess strong odors.
  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches
